Maldon Salt is a fourth-generation family-owned business. Our pyramid salt flakes have been skilfully made using the same traditional artisan methods in the coastal town of Maldon since 1882. Today, we’re not just custodians of an ancient culinary tradition but also creators of a highly successful and respected global brand. Maldon Salt is recognised the world over as the finest of sea salts and we are proud to have held the Royal Warrant for official purveyors of sea salt since 2012.

As a business, we take our corporate social responsibility to our customers, partners, and ourselves extremely seriously. We are always seeking ways to lessen our footprint and are currently working on a five-year plan to both increase the sustainability of all the packaging we use and make sure all our packaging is easily recyclable. In addition, with every Maldon salt box produced we will be supporting the World Land Trust and the fantastic work they do to protect threatened habitats and wildlife.

In order to support our growth, we are looking for a Site Lead to support our Manufacturing Sites in Maldon.

About the role:

  • Has full ownership for the performance, culture and future capability of the Longwick and Downs Road manufacturing sites and is expected to lead people, set direction and inspire ownership at all levels of the sites.
  • Acts as a visible, values-led leader who creates clarity of purpose, builds trust, and empowers teams to deliver exceptional results safely, sustainably and consistently.
  • To develop and implement site delivery plans for plant, people, and processes, within the context of the overall Operations and Business Strategy and aligning the delivery requirements of all departments.
  • To lead the multi-functional site team to deliver optimum use of resources to ensure the site delivers productivity, quality, cost, service, and safety objectives in an environment of high morale and engagement working with Projects consultants, External Contractors and QSE Function.
  • To lead the development and implementation of a five-year strategic roadmap for manufacturing operations, driving efficiency, innovation, and long-term growth.
  • Accountable for creating a high performing, engaged and capable team, where team members understand their role in the wider system and feel empowered to contribute to the success of the site.
  • Demonstrates, through presence on site, clear communication, consistent decision making, and the ability to coach, challenge and develop others.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and agree the business roadmap for Manufacturing, working cross functionally with key stakeholders for continuous improvement, reliability, quality, safety, innovation, engineering, capital, resourcing, and people
  • Driving a Continuous Improvement Mindset
  • Manage raw material manufacturing to meet fulfilment of daily plans, ensuring resources are appropriately deployed to meet daily manufacturing requirement
  • Management of raw materials into the manufacturing sites
  • Management of pan utilisation and yields and site costs to meet the business KPI metrics.
  • Ensuring compliance of all manual and Sage data is accurate and reviewed
  • Management of drying across the sites ensuring raw salt is dried to required moisture %. Optimising Yield and Not Compromising Packing
  • Carry out quarterly, six monthly and end of year staff performance reviews, including the creation of staff development plans using HRIS
  • Ensuring Shopworks is updated daily allowing a smooth month end for payroll.
  • Accountable for the development and driving the training plan for your team members and ensure training records are maintained, updated to ensure development within your team
  • Developing and mentoring the team for future progression and site support
  • Create a structure to allow for a balanced plan of workloads.
  • Mango super user – To drive and deliver operation excellence though effective use of Mango
  • Continuous development of all standards relating to Health & Safety, Food safety, SALSA and FDA standards
  • Any other reasonable duties as requested.

Safety

  • Create a safety-first culture by establishing a safe working environment, safe working practices and safety conscious behaviours amongst all employees.
  • Ensure all risk assessments are completed, maintained, and regularly updated in compliance with health, safety, and regulatory requirements
  • Suitable assessment and control of risk including maintenance and practice of continually addressing and reviewing of the risk register.
  • Management of external safety relationships with government authorities, customers, and other interested stakeholders as senior manager of site.
  • Accountable for safety across site; providing appropriate guidance, leadership, and management of teams responsible for safety.
  • Take full accountability for scheduling, coordinating, and ensuring completion of all insurance inspections across manufacturing sites, maintaining compliance and accurate documentation

Productivity

  • Cost effective labour utilisation and flexing to volume
  • Optimise pan yield across all sites using a zero-loss approach ensuring focus on improving current standards
  • Ensure effective and efficient stock management
  • Wastage elimination through prime material yield
  • Primary energy and utility efficiency using Verco Systems and Data Capture Technology
  • Maintaining elite standards, even when under delivery pressure.

Quality

  • Effective implementation and development of quality plans, standard operating procedures to deliver right first time and consumer complaint reduction driving a culture of quality across site teams.
  • Development of process capability to provide greater product consistency and compliance to specifications.
  • Drive standards ensuring the sites meet all food standards agency, SALSA and FDA requirements.

Cost

  • Develop and fulfil stretching budget demands for the site establishing and maintaining appropriate financial management and review
  • Deliver continuous improvement in site costs to reduce unit cost

Delivery

  • Fulfilment of departmental performance against determined key performance indicators
  • Ability to deal with the dynamic complexities of the operation

People

  • Provide suitable environment, training, development, and culture to build people capability.
  • Build technical and functional skills within the site.
  • Enhance the value of the collective effort through establishment of high performing teams.
  • Embed Company Purpose, Vision, Values and Behaviours within the site aligned to driving the Maldon way of operating where all employees play in position but understand the total goal of the organisation.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:

  • Substantial operational experience in a FMCG environment or similar automated environment is essential
  • Strong people leadership skills and ability to integrate differing functional demands is essential
  • Strong Continuous Improvement Background in a Growth Business
  • Project Management Skills for Managing Growth and Site Expansion Projects
  • Strong people management skills with ability to flex styles to differing individual and environmental needs is essential
  • Experience of managing significant budgets and material value throughput is highly desirable
  • Sound knowledge of manufacturing and HSE process and legislation is essential
  • Sound knowledge of HR policies and procedures is desirable.

Qualifications:

  • Degree level education or equivalent experience
  • Engineering or Science based background preferrable
  • Relevant industrial experience & qualifications that pertain to role

Hours

  • 42.5 hours per week, 8.5 per day between 07.30 and 16.30

Salary & Reward Package
