Full job description

Ward Manager – Acute Inpatient Mental Health Ward

Chelmsford, Essex
£47,300 – £53,700 (dependent on experience)
Full-Time | 37.5 hours per week

An established independent mental health provider in Chelmsford is seeking an experienced Ward Manager to lead its acute inpatient ward, supporting adults presenting with mental health needs and/or substance misuse issues. This is a senior leadership opportunity within a highly regarded private hospital, providing care exclusively to self-funding and privately insured patients.

The Service

The ward is an acute inpatient unit receiving consultant-led admissions. Patients may present with:

  • Acute mental health conditions
  • Substance misuse issues
  • Or a combination of both

Not all patients have dual diagnosis — some require treatment for mental health needs only, others for substance misuse only. Admissions typically follow a structured 28-day inpatient pathway, focused on stabilisation, recovery, and relapse prevention.

The Role

As Ward Manager, you will take full responsibility for the leadership, management, and clinical oversight of the ward. You will be stepping into a service that has been without a permanent manager for some time — offering a genuine opportunity to hit the ground running, stabilise the team, and put your own stamp on the ward culture.

You will lead a workforce of approximately 30 staff, including:

  • 6–8 Nurses
  • Around 20 Healthcare Assistants

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide visible daily clinical and operational leadership to the ward
  • Ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care in an acute inpatient setting
  • Work closely with consultant psychiatrists and MDT colleagues on treatment plans
  • Lead on governance, risk management, and CQC compliance
  • Recruit, supervise, and develop staff
  • Drive service improvement and embed a patient-centred, recovery-focused culture
  • Manage ward resources and represent the ward at senior forums

Requirements

Essential:

  • NMC-registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN)
  • Minimum 2+ years’ experience in a Ward Manager, Deputy Manager, or senior community management role within acute mental health services
  • Direct experience in acute inpatient settings where patients present with mental health and/or substance misuse needs
  • Strong knowledge of CQC standards and clinical governance
  • A confident, resilient leader able to rebuild and motivate a team

Desirable:

  • Experience in private sector mental health
  • Experience managing consultant-led admissions

Why Join?

  • Competitive salary with annual review
  • 25 days annual leave + bank holidays + your birthday off
  • Contributory pension
  • Free parking
  • CPD and leadership development
  • Staff wellbeing and benefits
