Job Title: Handy Person - Driver essential, due to location
Location: Kings Hill Plant Nursery
Hours: 37 hours a week which may include some weekend work

About Us

Kings Hill Nursery is a nurturing and inclusive plant nursery, café and function room, that supports vulnerable adults with learning disabilities and/or autism through meaningful work, skill development and community engagement. Our environment is calm, supportive and centred on promoting independence, confidence and wellbeing. We are looking for a practical, patient and caring Handy Person to help maintain the whole of our site and contribute to the positive experience of the people we support.

Role Purpose

The Handy Person will be responsible for the general upkeep, safety and maintenance of the nursery site. This includes repair work, basic building maintenance, gardening support and ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for staff, visitors, volunteers and the adults we support (our Co-workers). The role involves interacting respectfully and appropriately with individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism, placing them at the heart of everything we do. You will help craft opportunities for them to learn, grow and develop within a supportive and understanding environment where everyone is treated as an equal.

What you'll do

  • Carry out routine maintenance and repair tasks across the nursery, such as fixing fencing, repairing equipment, painting and basic carpentry.
  • Conduct regular site checks to identify hazards, safety issues, or areas needing attention.
  • Using our maintenance log to ensure all processes are followed.
  • Support with the upkeep of outdoor areas, including paths, growing spaces, and structures.
  • Assist with assembling or installing nursery equipment as needed.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe working order, whilst keeping an inventory up to date with any new or broken equipment.
  • Work closely with the General Manager to prioritise and plan maintenance tasks.
  • Follow health and safety procedures, including safeguarding protocols, and Safe Systems of work.
  • Engage positively and respectfully with the adults we support, contributing to a calm, inclusive, and supportive environment.
  • Occasionally support the horticultural team with general duties if required, during our busy production periods, dependant on maintenance requirements.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to urgent maintenance issues.
  • Being the lead on our Wood working project, delivering ideas that are suitable for our co-workers to participate in.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a horticultural environment or plant nursery.
  • Previous experience with adults with learning disabilities and/or autism.
  • Basic knowledge of safeguarding principles, training is also provided.
