RME Consultants are delighted to be working with this reputable client based in Milton Keynes, who is looking for a forward-thinking individual to join their team as a Technical Manager.

Role: Technical Manager (Food Manufacturing)

Salary: £50,000 - £55,000 per annum

Contract: Permanent, Full time

Location: Milton Keynes

Main Duties for Technical Manager:

• Food Safety & Compliance:
• Ensure the site complies with all relevant food safety legislation, regulations, and industry standards (e.g. BRCGS, HACCP, FSA).
• Maintain and update the site’s HACCP system and food safety management system.
• Lead site audits (internal, external, third-party, and customer) and ensure readiness at all times.
• Quality Management:
• Oversee the implementation and monitoring of quality control systems to ensure products meet specifications.
• Manage non-conformance investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
• Conduct regular GMP audits and drive a culture of food safety and quality throughout the factory.
• Customer & Supplier Assurance:
• Manage technical relationships with key customers, handling specifications, complaints, and technical queries.
• Approve and audit raw material and packaging suppliers to ensure quality and safety compliance.
• Maintain and review product specifications and technical documentation for all SKUs.
• Team Leadership & Development:
• Lead and develop the QA team, ensuring appropriate training, structure, and performance.
• Set clear objectives and accountability for technical staff across shifts.
• Develop a strong food safety and quality culture across all functions.
• Documentation & Systems:
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for traceability, quality, and compliance.
• Ensure systems (e.g., QMS, traceability, allergen control, shelf life testing) are robust and fit for purpose.
• Prepare documentation for retailer portals and technical submissions.
• New Product Development (NPD) Support
• Work collaboratively with NPD teams to ensure food safety and technical compliance of new products.
• Approve new ingredients, processes, and packaging from a technical perspective.
• Manage factory trials and first productions from a technical standpoint.
• Incident & Crisis Management:
• Lead technical aspects of product recalls, withdrawals, and serious incidents if they occur.
• Ensure escalation protocols and risk assessments are well understood and followed.
• Environmental & Ethical Standards:
• Support sustainability and ethical trading requirements, including customer or scheme audits (e.g., Sedex, RSPO).
• Monitor allergen, microbiological, and environmental sampling programs.

Experience required for Technical Manager:

• Degree or equivalent in Food Science, Microbiology, or a related discipline.
• Extensive experience in food manufacturing technical management.
• In-depth knowledge of HACCP, BRCGS, TACCP, VACCP, and customer standards.
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
