Full job description
Kitchen Staff/Job Description:
Bunk is a Cocktail and wings bar that offers fast bar food as a full meal. The kitchen staff will be expected to learn how to assist or manage the kitchen to ensure it is always clean and operational.
Kitchen Staff Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensuring the food preparation areas are clean and hygienic
- Positive attitude and excellent communication skills
- Washing utensils and dishes and making sure they are stored appropriately
- Sorting, storing and distributing ingredients
- Washing, peeling, chopping, cutting and cooking foodstuffs and helping to prepare salads and desserts
- Disposing of rubbish
- Cleaning the food preparation equipment, floors and other kitchen tools or areas
Basic Food Prep
The kitchen staff arrive early to organise the kitchen and do food prep to streamline cooking and meal presentation, including washing, peeling, and cutting vegetables and mixing ingredients for dishes.
Meal Presentation
The kitchen staff organises customers’ baskets before the waitstaff or sometimes even the kitchen staff are expected to bring the final product to the customer. They have a working knowledge of the day’s meals and menus and understand each dish or side we serve.
Stock Kitchen and Storeroom
The kitchen staff works to receive, stack, and properly store food in kitchens, cold storage and storerooms. They transfer food and supplies to the kitchen as needed and understand the importance of stock rotation and shelf life.
Cleaning Duties
The kitchen staff is responsible for ensuring all kitchen areas, food prep and food storage areas are clean and properly sanitised. This includes washing dishes and cooking equipment, cleaning floors, sanitising countertops and cutting boards, and maintaining all areas to health code standards.
Kitchen Setup and Breakdown
If they are the first to arrive, the kitchen staff turns on the fryers, starts kitchen prep work and prepares the kitchen and customer areas for service. When they’re the last to leave, the kitchen staff puts food and dishes away, cleans and mops the floors, and turns off all fryers, extractor fans and other cooking equipment.
Kitchen Staff Skills and Qualifications
Quick and efficient workers with experience in food preparation or cooking, no formal education or training is usually required to be kitchen staff, though the following skills are usually preferred:
- Dependability– a business is only as successful as the bar and kitchen staff it employs; all staff is expected to be reliable, on time for work, and consistent with the work they do. Staff should be able to work evening shifts and generally weekends.
- Physical stamina– the Kitchen staff work on their feet for the duration of their shifts, around scheduled breaks, in bars that may be uncomfortably warm; they more around the venue constantly, work at an efficient rate for a duration of time and may carry heavy loads for short distances
- Team player –the bar staff takes direction from the supervisors and facility managers and is willing to assist other team members to get their jobs done
