Full job description
Job Title: Engineering Team Leader
Reporting To:
Service manager
Role Overview:
The Engineering Team Leader will provide technical leadership and operational support to the engineering team delivering service, diagnostics, and installation of Autoquip garage equipment. This role acts as the primary technical escalation point for field engineers while supporting management in improving standards, skills, and consistency across the team.
The position remains hands-on, with the successful candidate continuing to work as an active engineer, albeit with reduced on-the-road capacity to allow time for leadership, planning, and team development responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership & Support
- Act as the first point of contact for engineers requiring technical assistance while on site.
- Provide remote diagnostics, fault-finding guidance, and decision-making support to minimise downtime and repeat visits.
- Escalate complex technical issues where required and support resolution through to completion.
Team Development & Training
- Work closely with management to identify skills gaps across the engineering team.
- Help design and maintain a structured training plan for new and existing engineers.
- Support mentoring and knowledge sharing within the team to raise overall technical capability.
Operational & Planning Support
- Review all engineering bookings to ensure:
- Correct parts have been identified and ordered.
- Parts have arrived and are available prior to site attendance.
- Jobs are correctly scoped based on service, diagnostic, or installation requirements.
- Help reduce inefficiencies, repeat visits, and job overruns through improved planning and preparation.
Standardisation & Continuous Improvement
- Work with the wider engineering and management team to develop and implement a standardised approach to:
- Service work
- Diagnostic procedures
- Installations
- Contribute to the creation of best practice documentation, checklists, and workflows.
- Support consistent quality, safety, and compliance across all engineering activities.
Hands-On Engineering Work
- Remain an active member of the engineering team, carrying out service, repair, diagnostic, and installation work as required.
- Balance field-based responsibilities with leadership duties, operating with a reduced on-the-road workload.
Skills & Experience Required:
- Proven experience working with Autoquip or similar garage equipment (lifts, brake testers, wheel alignment, etc.).
- Strong technical diagnostic and fault-finding skills.
- Previous experience in a senior engineer, lead engineer, or supervisory role (desirable).
- Ability to support and guide engineers remotely and in person.
- Organised and detail-focused, particularly in planning jobs and parts requirements.
- Strong communication skills with engineers, management, and support teams.
- Full UK driving licence (or equivalent, if applicable).
Personal Attributes:
- Calm and solutions-focused under pressure.
- Approachable and supportive leadership style.
- Passionate about developing people and improving standards.
- Professional, reliable, and safety-conscious.
- Able to balance hands-on engineering with leadership responsibilities.
What We Offer:
- Competitive salary (dependent on experience).
- Company vehicle, tools, and equipment.
- Ongoing training and development.
- Opportunity to shape engineering standards and influence team growth.
- A key leadership role within a growing technical team.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: £45,000.00-£55,000.00 per year
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Canterbury CT4 8AH
