Full job description

J3D Cake Artist (Fondant & Sculpted Cakes Specialist)

Location: Southall, London, UK
Company: Caker Street (Tower Bridge Investments Ltd)
Employment Type: Full-Time, On-site
Salary: Competitive UK market rate, based on experience

About the Role

Caker Street is looking for a highly skilled and professional 3D Cake Artist with strong experience in premium fondant cakes, sculpted cakes, and edible modelling.

This role is ideal for a candidate with UK bakery experience or formal Western-standard training, who can produce clean, high-end finishes and structurally sound 3D cakes for retail and corporate clients.

We are specifically seeking someone who understands UK design standards, professional finishing, commercial bakery workflows, and food-safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities1. Advanced 3D Cake Sculpting

  • Design and create complex 3D sculpted cakes in different characters, themes, objects, and shapes.
  • Carve cakes with precision to achieve realistic shapes, accurate proportions, and smooth finishes.
  • Build internal structures using safe supports, dowels, and armatures for tall, heavy, or complex cakes.
  • Produce clean, premium-level sculpted cakes suitable for UK retail and corporate customers.

2. Professional Fondant & Edible Modelling

  • Cover cakes with fondant to achieve flawless smooth finishes and sharp edges.
  • Create detailed fondant decorations, figurines, characters, and 3D edible toppers.
  • Work professionally with fondant, gum paste, modelling chocolate, edible paints, and texture tools.
  • Prepare and colour fondant/gum paste accurately to match customer briefs and brand colours.
  • Use advanced techniques such as airbrushing, hand painting, texture work, and edible printing where required.

3. Cake Assembly & Finishing

  • Assemble cakes with strong structure, clean finishing, and excellent stability.
  • Ensure cakes are finished neatly, with no visible cracks, rough edges, stains, or poor joins.
  • Collaborate with the design and sales team to bring customer concepts to life.
  • Meet daily production schedules and customer deadlines without compromising quality.

4. Quality Control

  • Maintain consistent premium finishing across all cakes.
  • Check every cake for symmetry, colour accuracy, smoothness, proportion, stability, and presentation.
  • Follow Caker Street’s brand standards for novelty cakes, corporate cakes, and personalised celebration cakes.
  • Ensure every final product is suitable for professional photography and customer delivery.

5. Client Customisation

  • Interpret customer briefs, sketches, reference images, and design ideas accurately.
  • Provide practical creative suggestions based on theme, occasion, budget, structure, and feasibility.
  • Work with sales/design coordinators to refine complex 3D cake ideas before production.
  • Handle corporate cake requirements, logo toppers, branded elements, and custom edible decorations.

6. Hygiene, Safety & Compliance

  • Follow UK food hygiene, allergen, storage, and cross-contamination guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean workstation, tools, equipment, and production area.
  • Properly label and handle edible and non-edible decorative materials.
  • Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate is preferred.

Skills & Experience RequiredEssential

  • Minimum 2–5+ years professional experience as a 3D cake decorator, fondant artist, or cake sculptor.
  • UK bakery/cake studio experience preferred, or equivalent Western-standard commercial cake experience.
  • Proven ability to create complex 3D sculpted cakes, fondant figures, and detailed edible toppers.
  • Strong hands-on skills with fondant, gum paste, modelling chocolate, edible paints, and professional cake tools.
  • Excellent understanding of cake structure, stacking, dowelling, internal supports, and stability.
  • Ability to achieve clean ganache finishes, smooth fondant covering, sharp edges, and premium detailing.
  • Strong artistic sense, including 3D shaping, colour matching, symmetry, proportion, and fine detailing.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced commercial bakery environment.
  • Strong understanding of UK bakery hygiene and food-safety standards.
  • A professional portfolio of previous 3D and fondant work is mandatory.

Highly Desirable

  • Diploma or certification in Cake Decoration, Patisserie, Baking, Culinary Arts, or Sugarcraft.
  • Experience in high-end cake studios, luxury bakeries, or corporate cake production.
  • Experience with airbrushing, edible printing, hand painting, and advanced sugarcraft.
  • Experience making corporate cakes, branded edible decorations, logo toppers, and themed celebration cakes.
  • Understanding of UK customer expectations, current cake design trends, and premium finishing standards.

Important Candidate Requirement

We are looking for a professional cake artist, not a basic cake decorator or home baker.

Applications without a strong portfolio showing 3D sculpted cakes, fondant modelling, sharp finishing, and professional-level work will not be considered.

Candidates may be asked to complete a practical cake decoration trial during the interview process.
