Full job description

Job Overview
After founding in Cambridge in 2021 and expanding to Norwich in 2025, Terrible Tours seeks enthusiastic and knowledgeable Tour Guide/Performer to lead engaging tours and provide visitors with an informative and enjoyable experience, to join for paid training sessions in late March prior to starting delivering tours during the Easter holidays. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, a passion for educating others, and the ability to captivate an audience through public speaking. 'Terrible Tours' aims to educate through fun! Also ideally will live in central Oxford and be available both during 'term' and holiday periods.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct guided tours for individuals or groups, sharing interesting facts and stories about the location.
  • Educate visitors about the history, culture, and significance of the sites being visited.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively to ensure all guests understand the information presented.
  • Engage with guests in a friendly manner, encouraging questions and interaction throughout the tour.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of the tour route, including any changes or updates to attractions.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants during tours.
  • Handle any issues or concerns that may arise during the tour with professionalism and poise.
  • Promote additional services or products offered at the location when appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in performance, public speaking or similar is highly desirable - most important single thing is that you enjoy entertaining a group.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to educate diverse audiences effectively.
  • A background in performing arts is advantageous but not essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to engage with guests from various backgrounds.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays as required.
  • A passion for storytelling and sharing knowledge about local history and culture.
  • Ideally located in central Oxford. The nature of 90 minute tours means its a fun and very well paid job for those who are in the City, but makes much less sense for those who need to spend time and money commuting.
  • Similarly in past experience has been best to be at least Gap Year age or above - just the reality of needing to speak to and manage a large group.
  • Available for some familiarization tours (as a guest) in August and to deliver tours from early September and through period to Christmas (barring short breaks/holidays etc)

Any tips received yours to keep. Also £10 bonus for each named 5* review on Trip Advisor or similar. So an unusually well paid (by £) and fun job!

Pay: £20.00 per hour

Benefits:

  • Flexitime
  • Work from home

Application question(s):

  • Some experience of performance/drama, teaching, and/or speaking to large groups

Location:

  • Oxford, Oxfordshire (required)

Work Location: In person
