Full job description

We're a small, hybrid nonfiction publishing house that launched earlier this year and are looking to expand our team due to the level of interest in our services. We work with authors on predominantly personal development, memoir, business, and health and wellbeing books, and we're looking for someone experienced in these genres to take ownership of the editorial side of the list.

Our team includes the founder, a part-time publishing assistant, light marketing support, and a regular freelance team who produce the books. This role would sit alongside that group, working closely with us day to day. We're excited about building this company; it's largely run by authors for authors, with our clients and the service we provide at the heart of everything. We build long-term relationships with our clients and are here to help produce quality books that benefit readers and create real opportunities for their authors.

This is a genuinely part-time role: 16 hours a week, done within school hours (roughly 9–1 or 10–2 etc., four days a week). It's a 12-month fixed-term contract to start, with a real chance of becoming permanent or more hours if it works for both sides and we continue to grow. Salary is pro-rata from a full-time equivalent of around £33,000 and therefore in the region of £14,000 for the hours above.

What the job involves:
You'll copy-edit manuscripts through to a high standard, working directly with authors to get their books ready for production, alongside occasional structural editing where a project needs it. You'll also review edits carried out by our freelance editors and be the point of contact for clients who want to talk through any editorial suggestions.

We will also require your assistance in developing our in-house style guide, which we have begun. Alongside that, you'll be involved in early editing for our book-coaching clients. For the right person, there are real opportunities to grow into the coaching side of the business and potentially ghostwriting over time.

Who we're looking for:
Solid editing experience in nonfiction publishing is essential. You don't need to have run your own list, but you will need to be comfortable working with nonfiction manuscripts on a range of topics. You'll also need to be happy to work independently and remotely, with occasional opportunities to attend book launches or our annual author party if you want to.

Reliability is really important as we run on set schedules and need to know we can count on the edited manuscripts being ready for the publishing timetable. We also have strict confidentiality clauses with our clients, which you'll need to adhere to.

To apply:
Send a CV and a short note (a few sentences is plenty) on your editing background and what you think you can bring to the team. If you're selected for interview, this will be held online the week commencing 27th July, although alternatives can be arranged if you're away.

Pay: £33,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Flexitime
  • Referral programme
  • Work from home
