Full job description

Unqualified SEN Teaching Assistant

  • Kingston upon Thames & Merton, South West London
  • £90 – £95 per day, PAYE only, paid weekly
  • Full-time, term-time only
  • ASAP start

This is a specialist SEN Teaching Assistant position for someone who genuinely wants to work with children and young people with Autism and complex needs.

I am working closely with well-established, supportive SEN schools in Kingston upon Thames and Merton that are looking to appoint Unqualified SEN Teaching Assistants to join their team as soon as possible.

This specialist SEN school supports children and young people aged 3–19 with a range of additional needs, including:

  • Autism / ASC
  • Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD)
  • Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
  • Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)

Some pupils are non-verbal or pre-verbal, some experience emotional and behavioural dysregulation, and others have physical disabilities and may be wheelchair users. Support is holistic, structured, and relationship-led.

Class sizes are small, staffing ratios are high, and there is a strong emphasis on emotional regulation, communication, sensory needs, and life skills alongside learning.

The role: Unqualified SEN Teaching Assistant

As an Unqualified SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Support pupils 1:1 and in small groups
  • Work closely with the class teacher to help deliver adapted learning activities
  • Provide emotional and behavioural support, particularly during moments of dysregulation
  • Support pupils with communication, routines, and sensory regulation
  • Build consistent, trusting relationships with children and young people
  • Support pupils with personal care where required (discussed openly before placement)
  • Contribute to a calm, structured, and nurturing learning environment

Who this role is for

  • Has genuine experience or interest in SEND / SEN (professional or personal)
  • Is calm, patient, and emotionally resilient
  • Is comfortable supporting children with Autism and complex needs
  • Is open to learning and developing within a specialist SEN setting
  • Is looking for a long-term SEN Teaching Assistant role, not short-term work
  • Brings warmth, empathy, and a good sense of humour

You do not need formal qualifications for this role. Graduates, career changers with relevant experience, and those with lived experience of SEND often thrive in this setting.

If this role interests you, apply today or contact Heeji Moon at Parker Smith Inclusion.
