Job summary
The post holder will manage specific aspects of the research support function, work on specific projects and contribute to the development and delivery of the divisions business plan & work programme, as well as contributing to the implementation of a comprehensive research management service.
You will be based in the Research Prioritisation team within the Research Support and Governance Office (RSGO). RSGO provides organisational-wide leadership in the coordination of research activity, expertise in research governance, management of ethical approvals, academic relationships, and liaison with funders to influence research investment for public health benefit. The post requires the ability to work on a range of research management activities with the minimum of supervision and to prioritise tasks effectively. Attention to detail and a methodical approach are essential.
Job description
The job purpose is to undertake a range of administrative and research support services to facilitate delivery of the teams objectives. This will include:
- Managing, coordinating and delivering aspects of RSGOs research support function
- Day to day management of and acting as internal first point of contact for the Central Research Information System (CRIS; software is Pure by Elsevier)
- Assisting senior research and governance colleagues to provide a research and governance service, including via the Research Ethics and Governance Group
- Supporting the completion of relevant RSGO outputs including annual science review
- Collating and disseminating research funding opportunities
- Managing the internal research publication process
- Supporting the operation of internal research funding schemes
- Liaising with internal and external stakeholders
- Coordinating research events organisation and administration
- Contributing to the provision of a comprehensive secretariat function for internal panel meetings and governance groups
- Maintaining effective records relevant to the needs of the team
- Researching and producing reports, papers, presentations and briefing notes as required
- Supporting enhanced incident (emergency response) as required through participation in Research & Science Evaluation Cell activities

As a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, UKHSA has a set of civil protection responsibilities which it must fulfil in the response to any emergency or major incident. Essential criteria:
- Degree (or equivalent qualification) in an area such as a STEM discipline, Social Sciences or Public Health, or equivalent relevant experience at a similar level such as working in a research management office environment
- Knowledge of or experience in research support or management
- Experience of working at a similar level in a research environment
- Knowledge of the UK research landscape, including funding sources
- Knowledge of ethical approval processes for research
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with proven presentation and scientific report writing skills
- Able to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders including at senior level
- Excellent critical appraisal skills and ability to analyse complex datasets, facts and situations
- An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships.

Location
This role is being offered as hybrid working based at any of our Core HQs. We offer great flexible working opportunities at UKHSA and operate using a hybrid working model where business needs allow. This provides us with greater flexibility about how and where we work, to get the best from our workforce. As a hybrid worker, you will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of your contractual working hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata, (averaged over a month) working at one of UKHSA's core HQs (Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, and London). Our core HQ offices are modern and newly refurbished with excellent city centre transport links and benefit from co-location with other government departments such as the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC).
Salary Information
If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary. Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms. Please be aware that the salary is based on the office location.

The new facilities will start becoming operational in the mid-2030s, with full completion by 2038. Staff will move in phases as facilities become available.
