Details Specific to the PostThe post within the Faculty Technical Services Team will provide laboratory operational support to the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences (SERS) within the Faculty of Health Sciences.
SERS delivers teaching, research and applied practice across sport science, biomechanics, exercise physiology, sports rehabilitation, physiotherapy and dietetics. The school supports a large and growing undergraduate and postgraduate student body and benefits from a range of specialist laboratory and applied performance facilities.
These facilities include sports rehabilitation teaching clinics and treatment spaces, a high-specification strength and conditioning suite, an environmental chamber, and a multifunctional Health and Human Performance Laboratory. The laboratory houses advanced biomechanical and physiological assessment technologies including Kistler and AMTI force platforms, electromyography (EMG), integrated 3D marker-based and markerless optoelectronic motion capture systems, breath-by-breath metabolic gas analysers, isokinetic dynamometry and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA).
Working as part of the Faculty Technical Services Team, the Biomechanics and Sports Rehabilitation Laboratory Technician will provide technical support for teaching, research and consultancy activities within the School. The post holder will assist academic staff and students in the operation of specialist sport and exercise science and rehabilitation equipment and ensure that laboratory and clinical teaching environments are safe, organised and fully prepared for practical teaching, research activities and applied sessions.
With a background in biomechanics and/or sports rehabilitation, the post holder will support laboratory-based practical teaching, sports rehabilitation practical classes and clinics, student research projects and externally facing activities such as outreach and engagement with partner organisations. The role will also involve supporting student placement experiences, assisting academic supervisors with laboratory-based research studies, and helping to maintain rehabilitation and assessment equipment used in practical teaching and clinical simulation.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a proactive and flexible approach to supporting teaching and research within a dynamic sport and exercise science environment.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the Post

- Preparing laboratory spaces, equipment and materials required for practical teaching, research activities and student projects.
- Operating, calibrating and maintaining specialist sport and exercise science equipment used within teaching and research laboratories.
- Demonstrating laboratory procedures, experimental techniques and equipment operation to staff and students during practical teaching and research activities.
- Assisting academic staff and postgraduate researchers with the delivery of laboratory-based research projects and data collection procedures.
- Supporting undergraduate and postgraduate students undertaking laboratory-based research by providing guidance on equipment use and experimental procedures.
- Ensuring laboratory spaces are safe, clean, well-organised and prepared for teaching and research activities.
- Undertaking routine equipment checks, calibration procedures and minor maintenance tasks where appropriate, and reporting faults where specialist repair is required.
- Maintaining accurate records relating to equipment calibration, maintenance schedules, consumables and laboratory procedures.
- Monitoring laboratory consumables and ordering replacements through university procurement processes where required.
- Supporting the implementation of health and safety procedures within laboratory environments, including assisting with risk assessments and ensuring safe working practices.
- Providing demonstrations of specialist equipment to staff, students and visitors during teaching sessions, research activities and outreach events.
- Assisting with outreach activities, open days and school engagement events involving the laboratory facilities.
- Liaising with academic staff, technical colleagues, students and external organisations to support teaching, research and consultancy activities.
