Job Overview
Opal Forensics is seeking a Laboratory Technician with experience in environmental genomics to support DNA sequencing and analysis of fungal and environmental samples. This is a, hands-on laboratory role within a small, highly collaborative team. The post-holder will play a key role in delivering high-quality molecular and sequencing workflows, contributing directly to sequencing performance, data quality, and continuous improvement in a quality-managed laboratory environment. The role spans the full technical pipeline, from controlled sample receipt and molecular preparation through sequencing execution, with an emphasis on practical delivery rather than formal management responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out and support sample receipt, logging, and traceability procedures
  • Perform DNA extraction at BSL2, PCR, and library preparation for environmental and fungal samples
  • Set up, run, monitor, and optimise sequencing workflows (ONT)
  • Troubleshoot molecular and sequencing issues as they arise
  • Perform sequencing quality control and review key performance metrics
  • Provide technical input and day-to-day support to other laboratory staff where needed
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and audit-ready laboratory and digital records
  • Support equipment validation, calibration, and method optimisation activities
  • Contribute to laboratory quality systems and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Identify workflow risks, deviations, and opportunities for practical optimisation

Essential Criteria

  • Degree (or higher) in Genomics, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Biomedical Science, or a related discipline
  • Typically, 4–5 years' experience working in molecular genomics or sequencing laboratories, experience working at BSL2
  • Strong hands-on experience with DNA extraction, PCR, and sequencing platforms
  • High standards of contamination control and laboratory discipline
  • Excellent documentation, traceability, and record-keeping skills
  • Experience working within quality-managed or regulated laboratory environments
  • Confidence in laboratory best practice

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working with environmental or fungal genomics samples
  • Hands-on use of EPI2ME or similar real-time sequencing analysis tools
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 or laboratory quality management systems
  • Experience with laboratory automation and optimisation
