Full job description

The Brief

We are compiling a team of experts to support an undergraduate student in the U.K. looking to build on his skillset ahead of joining the family business. The goal is to prepare the student for leadership and to provide him with skills alongside his studies that will enable him to enter the world of work with confidence and to make valuable contributions. We welcome conversations with experts in one or multiple of the fields listed and will likely expand beyond these parameters as the student develops further understanding of each area and where his passion/aptitude lies.

This programme is intended to develop financial literacy, commercial judgement, and an understanding of how financial decision-making drives business performance, growth, and long-term value creation. Rather than focusing solely on academic finance theory, the programme should provide practical insight into how successful businesses evaluate opportunities, allocate capital, assess risk, manage performance, and make strategic decisions.

The Ideal Candidate

This should be an experienced finance professional capable of helping a future business leader build confidence in interpreting financial information, understanding business economics, and evaluating the commercial implications of key decisions.

The ideal mentor will demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience within finance, investment, corporate finance, private equity, entrepreneurship, asset management, or closely related sectors.
  • A strong understanding of how financial principles are applied in real-world business environments.
  • Confidence in evaluating business opportunities, assessing risk, allocating capital, and supporting strategic decision-making.
  • The ability to connect financial theory concepts to broader business outcomes and organisational performance.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to teach complex topics to non-specialists and adapt material to the student's interests and focuses.

Programme Objectives

This programme is looking to move beyond academic finance theory, encouraging the student to develop a practical understanding of how financial thinking influences business success, strategic decision-making, and long-term value creation.

By the conclusion of the masterclass programme, the student should have:

  • A clear and sophisticated understanding of key financial concepts, including but not limited to:
  • Financial statements and their interpretation
  • Profitability and cash flow
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Corporate finance principles
  • Capital allocation
  • Business valuation
  • Debt and equity financing
  • Risk and return
  • Investment appraisal
  • Economic fundamentals
  • Critical evaluation skills for assessing business opportunities and investments, including interpreting financial performance, understanding the drivers of value creation, evaluating risk-adjusted returns, and making informed commercial decisions, alongside the confidence to engage with and discuss financial information effectively.
  • Enhanced commercial awareness of how financial principles are applied across sectors, including:
  • Entrepreneurship and founder-led businesses
  • Real estate and property investment
  • Private equity and venture capital
  • Professional services
  • Family-owned enterprises
  • Global markets and economic trends

Proposed Structure

The structure will be developed collaboratively, with 6-week sprints of masterclasses, and an additional 2 weeks for embedding and demonstrating learning. These could include short research or development tasks between masterclass sprints to encourage independent review and ensure that the programme follows a student-led, value-adding pathway.

Please ensure you answer all of the screening questions, as applications submitted without responses will not be considered.

Pay: £60.00-£150.00 per hour

Application question(s):

  • Can you tell us about your experience applying financial principles in a commercial setting?
  • This programme is designed for a highly intelligent undergraduate with a business focus, rather than a finance specialist. How would you explain a complex financial concept, such as business valuation, capital allocation, or cash flow, to someone with little formal finance training?
  • If you were designing the first six weeks of this masterclass programme, what key topics would you prioritise and why?
