We're Recruiting!

CLEANER

Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway

Location: Embsay and Bolton Abbey stations, North Yorkshire

All Aboard, Join Our Team

Would you enjoy helping to keep a much-loved heritage railway looking its best? We’re looking for a reliable, thorough Cleaner to help care for our trains, visitor areas and member facilities.

From preparing carriages for the next journey to getting our cafés, bars and event spaces ready for visitors, your work will help create a welcoming experience across the railway. You’ll work alongside employees and volunteers in a varied setting, with busy periods during special events, including THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Cleaning train interiors, including seats, tables, floors, windows, toilets and passenger areas.
  • Washing and cleaning train exteriors using approved methods and equipment.
  • Cleaning our shops, cafés and bars, including floors, furniture, counters and designated surfaces.
  • Looking after member and staff facilities, including the mess hut, communal kitchens, toilets and washing areas.
  • Cleaning sleeping accommodation and changing bedding where required.
  • Cleaning marquees and event facilities before, during and after special events.
  • Supporting train turnarounds and event cleaning during THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride.
  • Emptying bins, handling waste, replenishing supplies and responding to spillages.
  • Completing cleaning checklists and reporting damage, hazards or equipment faults.

What We’re Looking For

You’ll take pride in a job well done and understand how much clean, well-presented surroundings matter to our visitors and everyone who works on the railway.

  • A dependable, punctual and organised approach.
  • Good attention to detail and a willingness to get involved in varied cleaning tasks.
  • The ability to follow instructions and use cleaning products and equipment safely.
  • A friendly, respectful manner and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A willingness to learn the cleaning methods needed for our trains, buildings and facilities.

Previous cleaning experience would be helpful, but we also welcome applications from people with a positive approach and a willingness to learn. Induction and training will be provided.

Working Hours and Environment

Our cleaning requirements follow train services, accommodation use and event schedules. Depending on the agreed rota, shifts may include weekends, bank holidays, early mornings and evenings, with busy periods during our Christmas events.

The work includes indoor and outdoor duties and involves standing, walking, bending and handling cleaning equipment. We’ll provide guidance on safe working methods and discuss any workplace adjustments you may need.

Why Join Us

  • A distinctive workplace with historic trains and stations in the Yorkshire Dales.
  • A varied role across trains, buildings and special events.
  • The opportunity to work alongside staff and dedicated volunteers.
  • The satisfaction of helping visitors enjoy their day and supporting the care of our heritage railway.

Ready to Come Aboard

If you’re reliable, thorough and take pride in keeping things clean, we’d like to hear from you. Apply through Indeed with your CV and a brief note about your experience and availability.
