Full job description
An opportunity has arisen for a 12-month) fixed term post in Clinical Virology at UCLH.
The post will involve working at Senior Clinical Fellow (ST3+) level within the Department of Clinical Virology under the supervision of Virology consultants. The Clinical Virology department provides a liaison to the diagnostic virology laboratory, while providing clinical teams in the various hospitals that make up UCLH NHS Foundation Trust with clinical advice. The department works with the teams in Infection Prevention and Control as well as microbiology and Infectious Diseases to provide a comprehensive Infection Service.
This post would be ideal for someone who is looking to gain further experience in Clinical Virology with a view to pursuing specialty training in Infection or for a senior virologist looking for further experience in advanced diagnostics.
The clinical fellow will undertake the role of the virology ‘specialty registrar’ and will participate in the work of the department in clinical liaison, laboratory and infection control, under supervision of the consultants. This includes authorization (sign-out) of laboratory reports, dealing with telephone enquiries from clinicians and participating in ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings. There is a weekly viral hepatitis clinic that they would attend.
Specifically, this post has been created so that the clinical fellow can work alongside the virology/microbiology consultants and laboratory staff to monitor the introduction of mNGS as a diagnostic tool in clinical practice. Evaluation of the service after its implementation will be required with the post holder acting as a key point of contact for this. They will liaise closely with clinical colleagues concerning the diagnosis and management of patients, and prevention of infections.
Where appropriate, experience in all sections of the virology laboratory will be provided.
Additionally, the successful candidate will be on the on-call microbiology specialty registrar Rota. Specialist registrars who have completed the induction period join in the clinical advice on-call rota on Monday to Friday for Microbiology (including Virology) and on Saturday/Sunday for microbiology alone. As appropriate there is a consultant Microbiologist and consultant Virologist second on call.
