Full job description

Master your craft and learn to use it all over the world.

As a full-time soldier, entry-level Carpenter and Joiner in the British Army, you'll:

  • Plan carpentry and joinery tasks from sketches and apply them in field
  • Learn to use and maintain workshop machinery
  • Prepare timber for use, manufacture joints, use adhesives, produce windows, door frames and fitments
  • Carry out general construction work including first-fix timber frames and second-fix joinery fitments
  • Construct scaffolding, interpret scaffold terms and erect access scaffold and install ladders
  • Install partitions, floors, roofing, timber-framed buildings, formwork and shoring
  • Study for carpentry qualifications (including Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Carpentry and Joining (Military Engineering) and L2 apprenticeship)

To qualify, you must:

  • Be between 16 years 6 months and 35 years 6 months
  • Have a GCSE Grade A-C/9-5 or Scottish National 5 in Maths, English Language and one other subject
  • Be able to pass a basic fitness test.

From the start of your training, you'll earn £27,282 a year which will go up as you progress in your career.

Step 1 is your initial military training. Step 2 will be 12 weeks at the Royal School of Military Engineering. Step 3 will be 21 weeks of carpentry training.

You'll also receive 30 days' annual leave every year (plus bank holidays and extra leave after operations), free medical and dental care, cheaper living costs, and free gym and sports facilities.
