About Us
Social Care Wales provides leadership and expertise in social care and early years in Wales.
Our vision is to make a positive difference to care and support for children, adults and their families and carers.
To do this, we lead on developing and regulating the social care workforce, service improvement, data and research to improve care.
The Role
We are looking to appoint a new member of our Leadership Team, overseeing the operational delivery of our statutory role as the regulator of social care workers in Wales.
The role of Assistant Director of Regulation (Deputy Registrar) will be to lead our regulatory functions, including workforce regulation and Social Work Education Quality Assurance. They will provide leadership for the regulation of the social care workforce and quality assurance of social work education in Wales, ensuring that regulatory activity protects the public, promotes high standards of practice and supports a skilled, professional and confident workforce.
They will also lead the continuous development of proportionate, intelligence-led and evidence-based workforce regulatory systems that promote public confidence and support improvement across the social care sector.
Additionally, they will contribute to corporate leadership and organisational excellence across Social Care Wales.
This role is offered with flexible working options, and we are happy to consider job share arrangements.
The main focus of this role is to:
- Lead the performance of the regulation department
- Drive improvement in how we deliver
- Build confidence and trust in the regulatory system
- Ensure that the regulatory processes are compliant with legislative requirements and deliver value for money.
- Promote the use of workforce data, regulatory intelligence and evidence to identify emerging risks and trends.
- Ensure that Social Work Education Quality Assurance supports high quality training and learning.
- Ensure that regulatory processes provide the highest public assurance and are focused on public protection and improvement of the workforce.
- Ensure that risk is identified and risk management plans are in place.
- Adhere to Social Care Wales governance arrangements, and commitment to delivering to the vision and ambition of 'one public sector'.
- Act as a principal source of professional and regulatory advice to the Executive Team and Board.
- Provide assurance to the Board on the effectiveness of workforce regulation arrangements
- Contribute to the development of the Social Care Wales strategic plan
- Communicate Social Care Wales vision and ambition with energy and commitment, connecting the ambition to the organisations’ delivery objectives.
- Set and monitor standards that will ensure delivery of excellent customer service, internally and externally, balanced with regulatory responsibilities.
The closing date for this role is 16 August 2026 and the interview and assessment process will be in person at our Cardiff office on 04 September 2026.

The Benefits:
- Salary of £68,156 - £76,547 (pro rata if part time)
- 28 days’ holiday plus bank holidays as well as an additional 3 privilege days at a fixed time (pro rata if part time)
- 28 days rises to 29 days after 3 years’ service, and 30 days after 5 years service
