Business Development Manager – Packaging Distribution

Location: Hybrid/field-based
Salary: Circa £50,000 DOE

The Company

I’m working with a fast-paced packaging distributor supplying businesses with corrugated packaging, stretch film, protective products, tapes and other packaging consumables.

The business supports a broad customer base, including logistics providers, distribution centres, retail operations and industrial customers. Its model is built around proactive territory development, frequent customer contact and responsive service.

The Role

They are looking for a highly proactive Business Development Manager to develop a defined territory. It is a traditional field-sales position focused on opening doors, visiting prospective customers and building a strong portfolio of regular-spend accounts. The successful candidate will be expected to spend most of their time in the territory, generating opportunities through face-to-face prospecting and structured follow-up.

The role is ideal for an energetic salesperson who enjoys being on the road, creating opportunities from a cold start and developing smaller customers into valuable long-term accounts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Generate new business across the assigned territory.
  • Self generate leads by telephone prospecting, referrals and networking to create opportunities.
  • Target warehouses, distribution centres, logistics providers, retailers and industrial businesses.
  • Identify customers purchasing frequent volumes of packaging and consumables.
  • Build relationships with warehouse managers, operations teams, buyers and business owners.
  • Assess packaging requirements and recommend suitable products.
  • Develop new customers into regular and profitable accounts.
  • Maintain consistent contact with prospects and follow up quotations effectively.
  • Work with the Stevenage-based internal sales team to process enquiries and support customers.
  • Maintain accurate CRM records, pipelines and sales forecasts.
  • Attend the company site approximately once per month for team briefings and sales meetings.
  • Deliver agreed new-business, activity and revenue targets.

Product Range

The role will involve selling:

  • Corrugated boxes and packaging
  • Stretch film and pallet wrap
  • Bubble wrap and protective packaging
  • Packaging tapes and consumables
  • Full-pallet and high-volume packaging supplies
  • Branded packaging for retail and distribution operations
  • Stock packaging ranges and repeat-order products

Candidate Requirements

  • Proven success in field-based sales within packaging
  • A strong new-business mentality and willingness to prospect face to face.
  • Comfortable working to daily activity and revenue targets.
  • Able to build relationships quickly and convert smaller opportunities into regular accounts.
  • Commercially aware, resilient and highly self-motivated.
  • Strong organisational and territory-management skills.
  • Packaging experience would be advantageous but is not essential for a strong field salesperson.
  • Experience selling into logistics, warehousing, distribution, retail or manufacturing would be beneficial.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Candidates from packaging distributors with a proactive representative-led sales model would be particularly relevant.
