Anglia & Charter Legal Services Ltd is a legal support company providing paralegal, clerking and administrative legal support services to law firms, barristers, chambers and regulated legal professionals across England and Wales.

We are now building our first pool of consultant paralegals and consultant clerks. This is an opportunity to join a new legal support company at an early stage and become part of a growing professional network designed to support busy legal teams with reliable, flexible and well-managed legal support.

This role is for experienced candidates only. ACLS recruits on proven experience, deliverable results and practical track record, not qualifications.

The Role

We are looking for experienced consultant paralegals in the following areas:

Residential Conveyancing

Criminal Law

Chambers administrationJunior brief managementGeneral clerking support

Experience Requirement

Paralegal and clerking experience is essential.

Applicants for paralegal consultant roles must have a minimum of 3 years’ practical experience in the field for which they are applying. This may include experience in a law firm, regulated legal practice or legal department.

Applicants for consultant clerk roles must have a minimum of 3 years’ previous experience working with barristers’ chambers or in a comparable clerking environment.

We are not recruiting on academic qualifications. We are looking for people who have already done the work, understand the pace of legal practice, and can produce deliverable results.

Applicants must be able to show a practical track record in their chosen area, including the ability to complete tasks accurately, follow instructions, meet deadlines, handle confidential material and produce work capable of review by a solicitor, barrister, regulated adviser or legal professional.

Knowledge and practical ability will be assessed before a consultant is added to the active deployment pool. This may include a written assessment, scenario-based task, document review exercise, drafting exercise, interview, or evidence of previous work experience.

Applicants should only apply for an area of work where they have genuine practical experience and can confidently demonstrate competence.

Working Arrangement

This is a zero-hours contract. Work will be offered when instructions are received.

The role is mainly hybrid. Some work may be completed remotely, depending on the nature of the instruction. However, travel may be required to law firms, chambers, courts, tribunals, client offices or other professional locations across England and Wales.

A driving licence is not required. Where travel is required, this may be done by public transport, including train, bus, tram, taxi or other reasonable transport arrangements.

You may also be required to attend the company’s head office in Stoke on Trent for onboarding and training.

Important Start-Up Notice

ACLS is a start-up business. We are currently building our consultant pool before full deployment begins.

This means there may be little or no paid work for the first 2 to 4 months while the company completes onboarding, marketing, client acquisition and operational setup.

Applicants must understand that this is not a guaranteed-hours role. Work will depend on instructions received by the company. When paid instructions are received and allocated, consultants will be paid in accordance with the agreed rate or fee structure for that instruction. We believe that paralegals and clerks are entitled to more than minimum wage, hence this structure.

This role is therefore best suited to experienced candidates who are looking for flexible legal work, additional professional instructions, portfolio work, or a long-term opportunity to grow with a developing legal support company.

What We Are Looking For

We are interested in applicants who can demonstrate:

At least 3 years’ relevant practical experience

A proven track record in their chosen area of work

Strong written English

Good attention to detail

Professional communication skills

Reliability and honesty

Ability to follow instructions carefully

Respect for confidentiality and data protection

Good organisation and accurate time recording

Ability to work independently when required

Willingness to follow company procedures

Ability to produce work to a standard suitable for legal professional review

Training and Onboarding

Before being added to the active consultant pool, successful applicants will complete an induction programme and assessment process. This will include an open-book examination for consultant paralegals and consultant clerks, designed to assess their experience level, practical judgment, legal support competence, professional boundaries, written communication and suitability for deployment.

The induction programme will cover:

Legal competency and practical task preparation

Company policies and procedures

Use of the staff portal

Logging work and hours

Professional conduct

Confidentiality and GDPR

Secure document handling

Use of technology and AI

Travel safety and lone-working awareness

Pay

Pay will depend on the nature of the instruction, the work required, the consultant’s experience and the agreed fee structure.

Work may be paid by hourly rate, fixed fee, task-based fee or instruction-based arrangement. The applicable rate or fee will be confirmed before work is accepted.

Because this is a zero-hours role, income is not guaranteed and will depend on the volume of instructions received and allocated.

Why Join Us?

This is an opportunity to join a new legal support company from the beginning.

You will be part of a structured consultant pool, with access to professional onboarding, training , internal systems, practical legal work, and the chance to support law firms, chambers and legal professionals across different areas of law.

For the right person, this role offers flexibility, practical experience, professional development and the opportunity to grow with the company as its client base expands.

Job Type: Zero-hours contract

Work Location: Hybrid remote, with travel across England and Wales where required

Head Office: Stoke-on-Trent

Expected Start Date: Onboarding to begin immediately.
