Job objectives and responsibilities
The role of the PCO dog handler is to ensure the correct handling of the Prison's drug detection dogs, to detect, deter and prevent the misuse of controlled drugs in and around HMP Millsike. You will preserve the skill level of the dog's drug detection ability, whilst maintaining
Be a flexible resource to the searching requirements of the establishment.
To monitor and advise the SMT of the drug situation in the establishment, whilst working collaboratively with the Security Department to provide a programme of target drug searching.
Ensure the safety of all persons who come in to contact with the dogs.
As a Dog Handler Prison Custody Officer within the HMP Millsike, you will maintain the health and welfare of the Prison dogs.
It is a necessity to maintain all veterinary records and costs of the drug detection dogs
Person Specification
We are looking for motivated, caring individuals who want to be part of our team that will play their part in the Government's drive to cut reoffending through effective rehabilitation; enabling offenders to turn their lives around for good. We will provide a safe, secure environment at HMP Millsike, thus providing reassurance to the public and victims of crime that perpetrators are serving a secure sentence for their crimes.
Essential
- Excellent communication and Interpersonal skills, confident engaging with a wide and diverse range of people, with sensitivity, dignity and respect.
- Able to work off their own incitive
- Confidence in working with individuals with behaviours that may challenge the services
- Able to assess and manage risk of individuals
- Competent in Basic-level skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel and central IT systems (g. Data entry and ability to access information about residents)
Desirable
- Experience within the custodial setting would be an advantage.
