Compliance & Sustainability Lead

£30,000 – £35,000 per annum
Full-time or Part-time | Office Based

Stevenage, Hertfordshire

Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a proactive and detail-oriented Compliance & Sustainability Lead to join a long-established, successful and growing family-owned packaging group based in Stevenage.

This is a newly positioned role offering the opportunity to take ownership of the group's quality, environmental, compliance and sustainability systems, whilst playing a key role in helping the business meet its regulatory obligations and develop more sustainable practices.

Working across multiple departments, you will have the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the organisation's quality and environmental performance. You will take responsibility for maintaining and improving existing management systems, supporting regulatory reporting, driving sustainability initiatives and working closely with internal teams, customers, auditors and external regulatory bodies.

The role would particularly suit someone with experience in ISO 9001, ISO 14001, packaging compliance or environmental management who enjoys working autonomously and wants the opportunity to make a measurable difference within an established and forward-thinking business.

Job Profile

We are looking for an experienced Compliance & Sustainability professional to take ownership of the group's quality and environmental management systems, regulatory compliance and sustainability initiatives.

You will be responsible for maintaining and continually improving the company's ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, whilst also supporting the implementation of BRCGS Agents & Brokers accreditation.

A key element of the role will involve ensuring compliance with UK packaging waste regulations, including the accurate collection, analysis and submission of packaging data. You will work closely with customers and internal teams to collate relevant information and ensure the business remains compliant with its regulatory obligations.

The role will also provide the opportunity to identify and implement practical sustainability initiatives that deliver genuine benefits for both the business and its customers.

This position would suit someone who is highly organised, analytical and commercially aware, with the confidence to work independently, challenge existing processes and collaborate effectively across different areas of the business.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Maintain, develop and continually improve the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System.
  • Maintain and develop the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
  • Support the implementation and ongoing development of BRCGS Agents & Brokers accreditation.
  • Identify and implement practical sustainability initiatives that benefit the company and its customers.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant UK packaging waste regulations.
  • Manage and prepare packaging compliance documentation and regulatory reports.
  • Collect, monitor and analyse environmental, quality and compliance data.
  • Collate packaging waste data for customers.
  • Manage EPR data submissions to the relevant compliance scheme across the group.
  • Conduct internal audits of policies, procedures, processes and compliance systems.
  • Support external audits and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
  • Liaise with external auditors, regulatory bodies and key customers on quality, environmental and compliance matters.
  • Work collaboratively across departments to ensure quality, environmental and regulatory standards are consistently maintained.
  • Support the development of internal training and awareness initiatives relating to compliance, quality and sustainability.
  • Monitor relevant changes in legislation, regulatory requirements and sustainability developments.
  • Support the business in identifying opportunities to improve environmental performance and operational efficiency.
  • Provide appropriate reporting and management information to senior management.
  • Authorise invoices in accordance with company procedures.

Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience managing or supporting ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems.
  • Experience implementing or managing ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
  • Good understanding of UK Packaging Waste Regulations and packaging data reporting.
  • Experience with EPR reporting would be advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of quality, environmental and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organised with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and data management skills.
  • Proactive, self-motivated and capable of working independently.
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
  • Experience working with quality, compliance or environmental management systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, customers, auditors and external organisations.
  • Commercially minded with the ability to identify practical improvements rather than simply maintain existing processes.

Preferred Background

  • Degree in Environmental Science, Quality Management, Engineering or a related discipline would be advantageous.
  • ISO 9001 and/or ISO 14001 Lead Auditor or Internal Auditor qualification would be advantageous.
  • Previous experience within packaging, distribution, manufacturing or supply chain environments would be beneficial but is not essential.
  • Experience implementing or maintaining BRCGS accreditation would be advantageous.
  • Experience with packaging compliance, sustainability reporting or environmental legislation would be beneficial.

Hours

This is a permanent full-time or part-time position, based at the company's office in Stevenage.

Full-time hours are 9.00am – 5.30pm.

Part-time hours can be discussed and agreed at interview stage, providing flexibility for the right candidate.

The successful candidate may occasionally be required to work additional hours where authorised and where necessitated by the needs of the business.

Package

  • £30,000 – £35,000 per annum, depending on experience.
  • Salary will be pro-rata for part-time hours.
  • Full-time or part-time working arrangement.
  • Opportunity to take ownership of quality, environmental and sustainability initiatives across an established group.
  • Significant scope to influence and improve existing compliance and sustainability processes.
  • Opportunity to develop professionally across quality, environmental management, regulatory compliance and sustainability.
  • Competitive benefits package, including health club membership, private healthcare and life insurance, subject to qualifying employment period.
  • Interest-free loans to support with significant personal expenses such as house purchases and holidays, subject to company terms.
  • Daily fresh fruit, biscuits, tea, coffee and mineral water.
  • Strong long-term employment security within an established and successful organisation.
  • Opportunities for continued learning and professional development.
  • Pre-interview personality profile assessment to help understand how an individual's skills and characteristics align with the role.
