Your role is to provide independent assurance by inspecting our projects, workshop and Health & Safety management systems, identifying gaps and recommending practical improvements that support continuous improvement across the business.
Company: Jefferis Engineering Ltd.
Location: Based around regular visits to our fabrication workshop in Farrington Gurney, Bristol, together with inspections of our live construction projects across the South West, South of England and Central London.
Commitment: Typically one day every two weeks (approximately 2–3 working days per month), with the flexibility to increase as the business grows.
Rate: £40–£50 per hour, depending on experience, plus business travel expenses.
Engagement: We are happy to engage on a Ltd Company (Outside IR35), CIS or PAYE basis, depending on the successful candidate's preferred arrangement.
About Jefferis Engineering Ltd:
Jefferis Engineering Ltd is a specialist mechanical engineering contractor delivering high-quality pipework fabrication, coded welding, off-site manufacture, mechanical installations and engineering solutions across the commercial, industrial and energy sectors.
Visiting our fabrication facility in Farrington Gurney, Bristol, and across live construction projects throughout the South West, South of England and Central London, we pride ourselves on delivering projects safely, professionally and to the highest standards.
As our business continues to grow, we are looking to appoint an experienced Health & Safety Consultant to provide independent Health & Safety assurance across our workshop and project sites.
About the Role:
This is a practical, hands-on role providing independent Health & Safety support across our fabrication workshop and live construction projects.
The successful candidate will become a trusted advisor to the business, carrying out regular inspections of our workshop and project sites, auditing compliance, reviewing Health & Safety documentation and providing practical advice to support continuous improvement.
Your role is to independently verify that our Health & Safety management systems are operating effectively, identify areas for improvement and provide practical recommendations to help ensure we continue to work safely, efficiently and in full compliance with current legislation.
Key ResponsibilitiesProject & Site Inspections:
- Carry out independent inspections of live mechanical engineering and construction projects.
- Visit one or more live sites during each scheduled visit.
- Verify that work is being undertaken in accordance with approved RAMS, permits and company procedures.
- Inspect mechanical installations, pipework activities, plant rooms, hot works, lifting operations, access equipment and other high-risk activities.
- Assess housekeeping, welfare facilities, PPE, work at height, manual handling and general site organisation.
- Review contractor and subcontractor compliance.
- Liaise with Project Managers, Supervisors and operatives to verify safe working practices.
- Identify non-conformances and agree practical corrective actions.
- Follow up previous actions to ensure improvements have been implemented.
Health & Safety Documentation:
- Review project Health & Safety files.
- Ensure RAMS are suitable, current and site-specific.
- Verify toolbox talks, briefings and sign-offs have been completed.
- Review permits, statutory inspections and compliance registers.
- Check competency, training and certification records where required.
- Identify missing or incomplete documentation before it becomes a compliance issue.
Workshop Inspections:
- Conduct regular inspections of our fabrication and welding workshop.
- Review housekeeping and general workplace safety.
- Inspect welding bays, fabrication equipment and associated machinery.
- Check lifting equipment and forklift arrangements.
- Review the storage of materials and hazardous substances.
- Check fire safety arrangements, emergency equipment and escape routes.
- Ensure inspection and maintenance records are up to date.
- Identify improvement opportunities and agree corrective actions with management.
Management Support:
- Provide practical Health & Safety advice when unusual situations arise.
- Assist with accident and incident investigations where required.
- Advise on RIDDOR reporting requirements.
- Keep management informed of relevant legislative or compliance changes.
- Support the continual improvement of Health & Safety standards across the business.
Reporting:
Following each visit, you'll produce a concise report (typically no more than 2–3 pages) including:
- Executive Summary (Green / Amber / Red status)
- Key findings
- Major and minor issues
- Good practice observed
- Action plan with owners, priorities and target completion dates
- Annotated photographs where appropriate
We value practical, concise reporting that drives action—not lengthy reports that no one has time to read.
About You
We're looking for someone with experience in one or more of the following:
- Health & Safety Manager within a mechanical engineering or fabrication contractor.
- Construction Health & Safety Advisor with mechanical engineering or industrial project experience.
- Former Principal Contractor Health & Safety Manager.
- Health & Safety professional with experience in fabrication, welding or industrial engineering environments.
You'll have practical knowledge of:
- Mechanical engineering and construction activities.
- Pipework fabrication and installation.
- Fabrication workshop environments.
- Welding and hot works.
- Lifting operations.
- Plant rooms and industrial mechanical installations.
- Pressure testing.
- Construction site Health & Safety.
- Workshop Health & Safety compliance.
- UK Health & Safety legislation and best practice.
You should be confident working alongside operational teams and understand the practical realities of managing Health & Safety across both construction projects and fabrication workshop environments.
Our Expectations:
Health & Safety remains the responsibility of our Project Managers, Supervisors, Operations Manager and Managing Director.
Your role is to provide independent assurance by inspecting our projects, workshop and Health & Safety management systems, identifying gaps and recommending practical improvements that support continuous improvement across the business.
What's on Offer
- Flexible working arrangements.
- Long-term opportunity with an established and growing mechanical engineering contractor.
- Competitive hourly rate plus reimbursed business travel expenses.
- Flexible engagement via Ltd Company (Outside IR35), CIS or PAYE.
- Opportunity to make a genuine impact on the continued development of our Health & Safety culture.
If you're an experienced, practical Health & Safety professional who enjoys working closely with operational teams and helping businesses improve through independent inspections, practical advice and proactive compliance support, we'd love to hear from you.
