Garden Centre Retail Assistant

Reports To:

Retail Manager

Job Purpose:

To provide a friendly, knowledgeable and efficient service to customers while supporting the day-to-day operation of the garden centre. The Retail Assistant will assist customers with plant and gardening enquiries, maintain attractive and well-stocked retail areas, operate the till, support stock control and help create engaging displays that encourage sales.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Customer Service

  • Welcome customers and provide a friendly, helpful and professional service.
  • Assist customers with selecting plants, gardening products and other items, providing advice within the scope of your knowledge.
  • Maintain high standards of customer service throughout the garden centre.

Till & Retail Operations

  • Operate the till and process cash, card and other payments accurately.
  • Ensure the till area is clean, tidy and well presented.
  • Promote relevant products, offers and seasonal ranges to customers.

Merchandising & Displays

  • Create and maintain attractive, well-presented retail displays.
  • Merchandise plants, gardening products, gifts and other retail lines to maximise customer interest and sales.
  • Replenish displays and ensure products are correctly priced and clearly labelled.
  • Keep retail areas, plant areas and customer walkways clean, tidy and safe.
  • Refresh displays in line with seasonal changes, promotions and new product ranges.

Stock Control

  • Receive, check and put away deliveries accurately.
  • Replenish stock from storage areas and ensure products are available for customers.
  • Monitor stock levels and report low, damaged, missing or slow-moving stock.

Plant Care & Garden Centre Duties

  • Water, feed, clean and generally maintain plants in accordance with their requirements.
  • Maintain attractive and healthy plant displays.
  • Assist with seasonal changes and the movement of plants and products around the garden centre.
  • Support general garden centre housekeeping and ensure working and customer areas are maintained to a high standard.

General Responsibilities

  • Work effectively as part of the wider garden centre team.
  • Follow all company policies and procedures, including health and safety requirements.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and welcoming environment for customers and colleagues.
  • Assist colleagues across different areas of the garden centre when required.
  • Undertake other reasonable duties appropriate to the role and level of responsibility.

Skills & Experience:

Essential:

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • A friendly, approachable and helpful manner.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a busy retail environment.
  • Basic numeracy and confidence handling cash and card transactions.
  • Reliable, organised and willing to learn.

Desirable:

  • Previous retail or customer service experience.
  • Previous experience working in a garden centre, nursery or similar environment.
  • Good knowledge of plants and gardening.
  • Experience using a till or EPOS system.
  • Experience with merchandising, stock control or retail displays.

Working Conditions:

This role involves working both indoors and outdoors and may require regular standing, walking, lifting and moving stock. The successful candidate should be comfortable working in varying weather conditions and during busy seasonal periods, including weekends and bank holidays where required.

Pay: From £13.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 per week
