Position/Role: ASSISTANT GREENKEEPER

Location: St. Mellons Golf Club, St. Mellons, Cardiff, Wales

Reporting to: Head Greenkeeper/Deputy Head Greenkeeper

Contract: Full-time, permanent

Salary: Competitive (in line with BIGGA rates, dependent on experience and BIGGA-recognised qualifications)

ABOUT THE CLUB

Ideally situated between Cardiff and Newport, with the rolling hills of Monmouthshire behind and views stretching across the Bristol Channel, St. Mellons is a well-established parkland golf course with a proud history dating back to 1936, when it was originally laid out by the renowned architect Harry Colt.

Behind the course is a welcoming, member-focused club with a strong team culture and a genuine commitment to maintaining the highest standards of course presentation. As we continue to invest in our greenkeeping team and operations, we are seeking an Assistant Greenkeeper to work closely with our Head Greenkeeper/Deputy Head Greenkeeper in maintaining and developing this historic course to the standard our members and visitors expect.

THE ROLE

Are you passionate about sports turf, the outdoors, and the environment? St. Mellons Golf Club is seeking an enthusiastic and hard-working individual(s) to join us as an Assistant Greenkeeper.

Reporting to the Head Greenkeeper/Deputy Head Greenkeeper, you will be a member of a small, focused, progressive, and supportive greenkeeping team responsible for ensuring the golf course is presented to the highest standards every day.

We welcome applications from people of all genders and backgrounds and are actively working to build a more diverse greenkeeping team. Women remain significantly underrepresented in greenkeeping across Wales and the UK, and we'd love to hear from you.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Daily preparation and general maintenance across the course to ensure premier playing conditions.
  • All aspects of turf management & cutting/mowing
  • Bunker preparation & maintenance
  • Fertiliser and pesticide application
  • Tree/hedge maintenance
  • Participate in course project work
  • Safe use of specialist machinery, and its 1st/2nd line servicing
  • Maintain rigid adherence to club safety protocols, risk assessments, and COSHH regulations.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • Previous experience in a greenkeeping or similar landscaping role
  • Team player with a strong work ethic, flexible, and proactive (can do) approach, including a willingness to work early mornings, weekends and additional hours as required to deliver “competition”- level course preparation.
  • NVQ Level 2 or higher in Sports Turf Management or equivalent qualifications/experience.
  • Hold a valid UK Driving Licence. Valid PA1, PA2, and PA6 spraying certificates (or equivalent) and Chainsaw certification (both desirable but not essential).
  • Good understanding of turf husbandry techniques, agronomy, and mechanical fleet operation and maintenance.
  • Eye for detail, teamworking, use and understanding of greenkeeping scheduling, and the proactive drive required to keep pace with the bustling demands of a golf club environment
