Full job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the running of our garden maintenance team based in Nottingham.

The Role

As well as helping to provide ongoing maintenance to our regular clients there is opportunity to work on planting plans and to assist other teams and staff with design builds by RHS Gold medal designers.

Working pattern is set, Monday to Friday, with an 8AM start. End time dependant on season (4pm Winter/5pm Summer) with opportunity for optional paid overtime if desired. Travel between jobs is paid and included in the working day.

The Candidate

A successful candidate will be self-motivated with the ability to work alone and as part of a team on general garden maintenance and one off project work. Management skills are essential as is the ability to liaise with our customers directly. Basic IT skills will be required and regular time in the office planning and managing the diaries means a level of organisation is also preferred.

An extended understanding of horticultural techniques and principals is necessary, and previous experience in horticulture, gardening and maintenance is essential.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience with the safe use of garden power tools. A PA1 & PA6 spraying certificate is desirable, further training can be provided for the right applicant.

General Responsibilities

  • To organise and manage a team of 5-6 gardeners working at various gardens throughout the day in and around Nottingham
  • To liaise with other office staff in the administration of the maintenance team
  • Confident plant identification skills and care knowledge and an ability to instruct others on horticulture
  • Working with a mixture of hand tools, petrol small engines and pedestrian mowers
  • Garden maintenance tasks include pruning, weeding, mowing, hedge-cutting and reduction, planting, pruning and many other seasonal garden duties
  • Pushing gardens forward with fresh ideas & liaising with customers on what we can do to help
  • Ensuring that all equipment and machinery is kept in good working order and faults are highlighted to the managers promptly

Essential Characteristics

  • Previous experience in horticulture or relevant qualifications
  • Proficiency with handheld garden machinery and small engines
  • Knowledge of appropriate horticultural techniques
  • Management experience preferred
  • Basic IT skills & organisation ability
  • Capable of working in all weathers
  • Ability to work in a safe and professional manner
  • Full UK driving license (Essential)

Desirable Qualifications

  • RHS Level 2 or similar
  • Emergency First Aid at Work Certification (but training will be provided for the right candidate)
  • PA1/PA6 spraying license
