Live-in Head Gardener

Role: Head Gardener

Location: Near Wells, Somerset

Salary: £50,000 gross per annum (DOE)

Accommodation: 1-bedroom cottage (dogs welcome!)

The Burford Recruitment Company is delighted to be working on behalf of a prestigious private family estate near Wells, who are seeking an experienced and hands-on Head Gardener to join their established estate team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a knowledgeable and proactive head gardener to take a leading role within a beautiful and evolving private estate featuring formal gardens, woodland, waterways, and extensive grounds. The estate extends to approximately 100 acres, including farmland and woodland, with around 15–20 acres of gardens and grounds surrounding the main residence maintained to a high standard.

Estate features include a stunning Victorian walled garden, croquet lawn, topiary, waterfalls, Grade II listed bridges, a newly designed north garden and extensive woodland and riverbanks

Responsibilities

  • Lead by example in the day-to-day maintenance and development of the estate gardens and grounds
  • Carry out hands-on gardening duties to an exceptional standard, spending approximately 90–95% of the role actively gardening
  • Work closely with the Estate Manager and wider gardening team to ensure smooth day-to-day operations
  • Support and oversee the work of the Senior Gardener, part-time gardeners and estate staff
  • Manage and prioritise workloads independently with minimal supervision
  • Maintain formal lawns, borders, topiary, hedging, woodland areas, riverbanks and estate features
  • Operate and maintain garden machinery and equipment safely and effectively
  • Ensure all areas of the gardens and grounds are maintained to the highest standards throughout the seasons
  • Support wider estate maintenance duties where required

Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience working within a private estate environment is essential
  • Strong practical horticultural knowledge and hands-on gardening experience
  • Experience supervising or working alongside a gardening team
  • Ability to work independently and identify priorities proactively
  • Reliable, hardworking and capable of hitting the ground running
  • Chainsaw certification
  • PA1/PA6 spraying certificates
  • RHS Level 2 qualification preferred but not essential
  • Friendly, professional and team-oriented approach

Pay: £50,000.00 per year
