Full job description

Exciting opportunity for a skilled Head Gardener to manage the gardens of a Grade II* House, rural business centre and holiday cottage enterprise on the North Wales/ Shropshire border.

Main gardens consist of 5 acres of formal garden and lawns with roses, herbaceous borders and mixed beds, an additional 5 acres of woodland garden with ponds, trees and shrubs, and a further 3 acres surrounding rural offices. There are several holiday cottages around the estate with gardens to maintain and the main house also has a large conservatory with a collection of associated plants.

As Head Gardener, your prime focus will be the upkeep of the conservatory, formal and woodland gardens, with responsibility for caring for the health of plants, weeding, pruning, irrigating, spraying, strimming, hedge-cutting etc. and helping the owners to develop and improve the main gardens. You will also oversee the holiday cottage gardens to ensure they are up to standard.

The family live on the estate full time and the house and grounds are also used for corporate events and private hire throughout the year so attention to detail and a high standard of maintenance is required.

The estate also employs a full time under gardener, a part time gardener, and a landscape ranger whose duties include helping in the garden at busy times so the ability to supervise, motivate and work as part of a team is crucial.

A proactive attitude towards the overall upkeep of the garden and grounds

A hard-working team player who is friendly and self-motivated and is also able to work alone. The ability to schedule your team’s workload and manage their time effectively.

Experience in a similar role and ability and willingness to carry out a physically demanding role
Chainsaw Maintenance/Crosscutting and spraying certificates strongly desired

Experience & the ability to operate a range of tools and horticultural machinery relevant to the position

Love of the outdoors and working in all weather conditions

A Full UK driving licence and your own transport.

-Competitive salary dependent on experience and whether applicant requires a live-in or live-out role

- Full time employment working an average of 40 hours per week.

- 28 days holiday including bank holidays

- Opportunity to work with a friendly dynamic team dedicated to preserving and enhancing a historic cross border estate
