About the role

A private family estate near Solihull is seeking a skilled and passionate Gardener to take day-to-day care of its formal gardens and fine lawns. This is a full-time, permanent, live-out position for someone who takes real pride in presentation and detail.

You will maintain borders, beds, hedges and topiary, seasonal planting and displays, pots and containers, glasshouse and propagation, and, importantly, the lawns, including feeding, aeration, scarifying and turf-care programmes. Experience with fine turf or greens-keeping is a distinct advantage, as there is the opportunity to look after a putting green.

Key responsibilities

- Care of formal gardens: borders, beds, shrubs, climbers, hedges and topiary, including pruning, training, weeding, mulching and feeding.

- Lawn and fine-turf care: mowing to standard, edging, aeration, scarifying, top-dressing, feeding and treatment programmes; maintaining a putting green to playing standard (desirable).

- Seasonal planting schemes, bulbs, bedding, pots and container displays for year-round interest.

- Propagation and glasshouse or cold-frame work.

- Irrigation set-up and watering during dry spells.

- Safe storage and application of fertilisers and approved plant-protection products where certified.

- Tool and equipment care; keeping the potting shed and stores organised.

About you

- Horticultural training (RHS, City & Guilds or equivalent) or strong practical experience.

- Sound plant knowledge and proper pruning, planting and border-care technique.

- Lawn-care competence and pride in presentation; able to work to a high standard unsupervised.

- Reliable and organised, able to plan seasonal work.

- Desirable: fine-turf or greens-keeping experience, PA1/PA6 spraying certificates, propagation skills, full UK driving licence.

What we offer

A rewarding, year-round position in beautiful surroundings, a competitive salary (32,000 to 42,000 pounds depending on experience), workplace pension, and the scope to make the gardens your own.

Pre-employment checks: right to work in the UK, two references and a basic DBS check.

To apply, please send a short CV and a note on your horticultural experience, in confidence, to michael@fulfordhall.uk. The estate will be identified to shortlisted candidates only. We are an equal-opportunities employer and welcome applications from all backgrounds.
