Head Gardener – Private Estate, Boars Hill, Oxfordshire
Location: Boars Hill, Oxfordshire
Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: £25,480.00 - £27,300.00 based on experience

About the Role:
The Tactical Group is seeking an experienced and passionate Head Gardener to take ownership of a large private commercial estate in the beautiful setting of Boars Hill, Oxfordshire. This is a unique and rewarding opportunity to work in a prestigious and well-maintained environment, playing a key role in upholding high horticultural standards across the estate.As the Head Gardener, you will be employed by Tactical Group and will report directly to the Operations Manager for Grounds Maintenance & Open Spaces. You will be responsible for the ongoing care, development, and presentation of all shrubs, flower beds, and open landscaped areas on site. You will also work closely with the Oxfordshire Regional Supervisor to manage and coordinate the weekly grass cutting schedule with the external maintenance team.Key Responsibilities:

  • Take full responsibility for the maintenance, planting, and enhancement of all horticultural areas including shrubs, borders, and seasonal displays.
  • Maintain a consistently high standard of presentation across all open spaces.
  • Liaise regularly with the Oxfordshire Regional Supervisor to oversee the scheduling and delivery of weekly lawn cutting and grass maintenance by the external team.
  • Monitor plant health, implement pest and disease control measures, and recommend improvements as needed.
  • Maintain tools and machinery to ensure they are safe and in good working order.
  • Work closely with the Operations Manager to plan seasonal work, order supplies, and support longer-term grounds development plans.
  • Carry out regular inspections and ensure the estate grounds are kept safe, clean, and visually appealing.
  • Adhere to Tactical Group's health and safety procedures and promote safe working practices at all times.

Person Specification:

  • Significant experience in a Head Gardener, Senior Gardener, or similar horticultural role.
  • Strong plant knowledge, attention to detail, and a creative eye for garden design.
  • Recognised horticultural qualifications (e.g., RHS Level 2/3, City & Guilds, NVQ) are desirable.
  • Experience supervising staff or managing contractors.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • A proactive, hands-on approach and pride in delivering excellence.
  • Full UK driving licence (preferred).
