Head Gardener

Private Hall Estate, Lincolnshire

Salary: £38,000–£45,000 depending on experienceAccommodation: Live-in accommodation available or live-out consideredHours: Full Time

The Hall is a distinguished private country estate with beautifully maintained formal gardens, parkland, woodland, productive gardens and family grounds. We are seeking an experienced, passionate and hands-on Head Gardener to lead the continued development and maintenance of our exceptional gardens while managing a dedicated and enthusiastic gardening team.

This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of an established estate, working closely with the Estate Manager and family to preserve the character of The Hall whilst continually enhancing the gardens throughout the seasons.

The Role

As Head Gardener you will lead a team consisting of:

  • Three full-time Gardeners/Groundskeepers
  • One part-time Gardener
  • Supported by an experienced Estate Manager

This is a practical leadership role. You will spend the majority of your time working alongside the team while planning, organising and delivering the highest horticultural standards across the estate.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing and motivating the gardening team.
  • Planning seasonal maintenance programmes and annual horticultural schedules.
  • Maintaining formal gardens, herbaceous borders, lawns, woodland, kitchen gardens and ornamental planting.
  • Developing new planting schemes and garden improvements.
  • Tree, shrub and hedge management.
  • Pest, disease and plant health management.
  • Budget management and ordering plants, materials and equipment.
  • Maintaining machinery and ensuring health and safety compliance.
  • Working collaboratively with the Estate Manager and wider estate team to deliver projects across the estate.
  • Preparing the gardens for family events and entertaining.

About You

The successful candidate will have:

  • Previous experience as a Head Gardener or Senior Gardener on a private estate, country house or luxury property.
  • Excellent plant knowledge and strong horticultural expertise.
  • Proven experience leading and developing a gardening team.
  • High standards with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
  • Organic Experience
  • Chainsaw qualifications (desirable).
  • Full UK driving licence.
