MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT
Reporting Line
The post holder will report to the Head of Maintenance
Contract
This post is a full-time position (preferred start date - immediate)
Main Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
· To maintain, repair and keep in good order and appearance the physical facilities of the school including (but not exclusively) the drainage, buildings, services, fixtures, fittings, furnishings, equipment and grounds (the latter in collaboration with the Groundsman).
· To manage deliveries and the internal distribution thereof.
· To be aware of, promote and undertake best practice regarding the use and conservation of energy and resources.
· To organise, oversee and liaise with external contractors in relation to all the above.
· To perform all the above duties with the utmost attention to detail and care regarding; Health and Safety Regulations, security of the site and its contents, record keeping, and the positive, caring atmosphere of the school.
· To liaise with all other staff in the school (teachers, office, catering, cleaning, groundsman) in the planning and carrying out of these duties as appropriate.
· To carry out such facilities management as requested (i.e routine monitoring (but not refilling) of fire appliances, break glass points and emergency lighting).
· To carry out any reasonable task in relation to the above matters as identified by the Head of Maintenance, School Business Manager or Headmaster.
· Call outs in the evenings and weekends along with call outs for Events on a rotation basis.
PERSONAL SPECIFICATION
Attributes
The ideal successful applicant will have a range of attributes necessary for this broad ranging job.
· Presentable and personable. Able to converse and communicate with children, parents and staff with appropriate language, dress and demeanour.
· Having initiative and able to work unsupervised and sometimes undirected and to solve maintenance problems.
· Well organised and able to forward plan maintenance schedules and to be proactive in identifying maintenance issues.
· Reliable, trustworthy, hard worker and to work well under pressure.
· Able to take direction and to make suggestions.
· Having a broad and flexible approach to the job and be able to respond to out of hours emergencies on a rota style basis.
· Being multi-skilled with emphasis on safety issues.
· A good sense of humour and understanding of children.
· Good problem-solving skills.
Skills
The ideal successful applicant will have a number of maintenance and building industry skills;
· Masonry, pointing and plaster work (minor works only)
· Woodwork and joinery
· Electrical (minor work)
· Plumbing (maintenance issues only)
· Painting
· Glazing (repairs and small replacements)
· Fencing, paving and general outdoor works.
This is a full-time position for 40 hours a week, 52 weeks of the year, working Monday to Friday 8am – 5pm. Part time hours will be considered.
Full time annual salary £25,000 - £27,000 dependent on experience.
This job description provides a guide to, and general description of the duties and responsibilities of the Maintenance Assistant and is not necessarily a comprehensive definition of the post. In this respect, the post holder will be expected to undertake any other related tasks as may reasonably be requested by the Headmaster or School Business Manager.
