Full job description
Reporting to the Head of Income, the Senior Business Analyst - Income Reporting (External) leads the development, management, and optimisation of the Trust Group’s income reporting systems, with responsibility for the SLAM database and the accurate extraction, processing, and reporting of clinical activity data. The role ensures the timely and accurate realisation of approximately £1.9bn in clinical income, supporting statutory, contractual, and commissioner reporting requirements.
As the technical lead for external income reporting, the post-holder produces and oversees commissioner income reports, contract performance analysis, statutory returns, and reconciliation processes, working closely with commissioners, operational services, informatics teams, and finance colleagues. The role combines advanced analytical and technical expertise in SQL, SLAM, and business intelligence tools such as Power BI or Qlik, with a strong focus on data management, reporting automation, and financial modelling.
The position also provides leadership and technical guidance to the Clinical Income team, supports income planning and service developments, develops pricing frameworks and commissioning guidance, and delivers complex scenario modelling, impact assessments, and performance analysis. The post-holder ensures compliance with NHS, commissioning, and accounting standards while representing the Income and Finance teams at internal and external stakeholder meetings.
Lead the Trust Group’s external income reporting function, ensuring the accurate and timely production of monthly SLA, commissioner, statutory, and financial reporting, in line with NHS Payment Scheme (NTPS) and contractual requirements. Oversee the development and optimisation of income reporting systems, including SQL-based data extraction, complex data modelling, forecasting. Lead the modernisation of reporting automation, and migration of reports to Power BI.
Providing expert leadership in activity and income planning, commissioner negotiations, pricing and tariff interpretation, contract risk management, financial forecasting, and income maximisation initiatives. Ensure robust reconciliation processes between clinical activity, invoicing, and income received, while maintaining compliance with audit, year-end, and accounting requirements.
Manage and develop the External Clinical Income reporting team (one direct report, two indirect), setting objectives, supporting professional development, and ensuring delivery against competing priorities.
Deliver complex financial analysis, business cases, scenario modelling, and strategic advice to senior finance leaders, while representing the Trust at internal committees, commissioner meetings, and national income and pricing forums.
Act as the Trust’s subject matter expert on NHS payment mechanisms, commissioning processes, and income reporting, deputising for the Head of Income as required.
Since our foundation in 1828, the Royal Free London has had a pioneering history, leading the way in many areas of healthcare: advancing our understanding of illness; taking advantage of the latest technology; developing new and better therapies; and tackling health and social inequalities.
That pioneering spirit continues to be central to our approach today and contributes to our record of delivering some of the best clinical outcomes for patients across our local and specialist services.
As a large NHS foundation trust , we employ more than 17,000 staff from 120 countries, serve a population of more than 1.6 million people across 70 sites in north London and Hertfordshire and are one of the biggest providers of cancer care in the UK.
We want to bring the best of the NHS to every patient, no matter which of our hospitals or services they visit.
We aim to achieve this through our three-fold mission of delivering world class treatment and local care, underpinned by groundbreaking research and the very best in class for learning and education.
From our four main hospitals and at various other satellite sites and hospital trusts, we offer local services for local people.
