About the role

In the role of Works Manager at Historic Environment Scotland, you'll have the unique opportunity to manage and contribute to the constant programme of works on historic buildings, including some truly rewarding and unique projects. You will work closely with a diverse team of professionals, including the District Architect, Structural engineers, Quantity surveyors, and the Health and Safety team.

Your key objectives will include overseeing the daily deployment of Monument Conservation staff, ensuring the highest standards of maintenance and conservation at Stirling Castle and surrounding sites. You'll be responsible for project planning, resource management, and implementing health and safety policies, ensuring our historic sites are preserved for future generations.

The successful candidate will need to be quick-thinking, adaptable, and an excellent problem solver. You'll thrive in a collaborative environment where innovative ideas are encouraged, and trust and teamwork are paramount. About you

We are looking for a passionate and dedicated individual to join our team as a Works Manager at Historic Environment Scotland. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Traditional Building Craft Apprenticeship: A solid foundation in traditional building crafts, demonstrating your hands-on experience and expertise in this field.
  • Knowledge and Experience in Conservation Practices: A deep understanding of current conservation techniques and practices related to historic buildings and monuments.
  • IT Proficiency: Competence in using IT tools such as Outlook, Word, and Excel to manage project documentation and communications effectively.
  • Health and Safety Expertise: Strong knowledge of health and safety best practices, with experience in conducting risk assessments and ensuring compliance on-site.
  • Staff Management Experience: Proven experience in managing or supervising a team, with the ability to lead, motivate, and develop staff.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to think quickly and adapt to new challenges, ensuring the smooth execution of projects and maintenance tasks.
  • Attention to Detail: A meticulous approach to maintaining the high standards required for a five-star visitor attraction like Stirling Castle.
  • Team Collaboration: A collaborative mindset, capable of working closely with a range of disciplines including architects, engineers, and compliance teams to achieve common goals.
  • Innovation and Trust: An innovative spirit, open to new ideas, and able to foster a trusting and supportive team environment.
  • Desirable Qualifications: An HNC in construction (or a willingness to work towards it), a driving license, and certifications like SMSTS or IOSH Managing Safely are advantageous but not essential.
