Full job description

Stirling Council Libraries have a strong track record of community engagement, partnership working and innovation. Reading is the core service we offer and we are looking for a dynamic and creative individual to support and develop services to readers of all ages. This post leads on reader development, with responsibility for stock management and selection and involvement in local and national initiatives to encourage reading. The Reader Services Librarian works with the Outreach team who deliver the Housebound service with the assistance of volunteers, and the Young People’s Services team who co-ordinate library services for children including Bookbug, collections for playgroups and the Every Child A Library Member initiative. In addition the postholder supports a busy calendar of events including Book Week Scotland and works with the Stirling Makar to promote poetry for all.

Stirling Council Libraries have a new Libraries Strategy and are committed to working closely with our staff and communities to provide the best possible service. We support the new Scottish Reader Development Strategy and aim to communicate the joy of reading, ensure equitable access to resources and promote literacy for all ages. You will join us at an exciting time as we work to deliver our new Libraries Strategy, grow our audience and ensure a modern, flexible and forward-looking service for the people of Stirling. This post is key to achieving that aim.

The Reader Services Librarian is a member of the Libraries Management Team with direct line management responsibility for a number of libraries.

We are looking for a qualified librarian with good knowledge of current publishing for adults and young people. The postholder should demonstrate experience of delivering reader development programmes and organising events. You will support staff in libraries hosting activities and work with partnership with other organisations. You will work with communities to ensure the services we offer meet local needs and engage local people.

You should have experience in a management role, be well-organised, able to work effectively within a busy team, have excellent customer service skills and experience of working with communities and volunteers. You should have highly developed communication skills including use of social media.

Based at our Library HQ, a flexible approach to the working week, which can include evening and weekend working, is essential.

The successful candidate will be required to be a member of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG) for Children and Adults. If your application is progressed after the interview, you will be asked to complete the form and have your details verified.

If you’ve got the right skills for the job we want to hear from you. We encourage applications from the right candidates regardless of age (restrictions apply to Modern Apprenticeships), disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, belief or race.
