Full job description

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Fitter to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out mechanical fitting, maintenance and repair work, helping to ensure equipment operates safely, reliably and efficiently.

This is a hands-on role suited to a practical and methodical individual with strong mechanical knowledge, good fault-finding abilities and the confidence to work independently when required across a varied selection of automated and manual machinery.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out mechanical fitting, maintenance, repair and replacement of mechanical components.
  • Investigate mechanical faults, identify causes and carry out appropriate repairs.
  • Dismantle, inspect, reassemble and adjust mechanical equipment as required.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical documentation and component specifications.
  • Work with mechanical components, including bearings, shafts, gears, chains, couplings and drive systems, where applicable.
  • Use hand tools, power tools and measuring equipment safely and competently.
  • Assist with planned maintenance activities to improve equipment reliability and minimise downtime.
  • Identify worn or damaged components and recommend appropriate corrective action.
  • Ensure all work is completed to the required quality standards and within agreed timescales.
  • Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.
  • Comply with company health and safety procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
  • Report recurring faults, equipment defects and opportunities for improvement.

Essential requirements

  • Proven experience in a mechanical fitting, maintenance or repair role.
  • Strong practical mechanical skills and a good understanding of mechanical systems.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical faults and carry out effective repairs.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Competent use of hand tools, power tools and appropriate measuring equipment.
  • A methodical approach to problem-solving and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A proactive attitude towards health and safety and maintaining high standards of workmanship.

Desirable requirements

  • A recognised mechanical engineering or mechanical fitting qualification, apprenticeship or equivalent technical training.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience with bearings, gearboxes, chain drives, belt drives and mechanical power transmission.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance practices and equipment reliability.
  • Experience with pneumatic or hydraulic systems.
  • Experience identifying recurring faults and suggesting practical engineering improvements.

The ideal candidate will be reliable, practical and organised, with a strong work ethic and a willingness to take responsibility for the quality of their work. They should be comfortable working in a hands-on engineering environment and able to prioritise tasks effectively.
