Full job description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Trainer to join our Northern Care Alliance (NCA) Clinical Coding Team.
At NCA you will deliver high-quality clinical coding training across one of the widest and most complex specialty ranges in the NHS — from obstetrics and neonates to spinal, neurosurgery, rehab and major trauma. Few trusts nationally can offer this breadth of casemix.
You will plan and deliver structured trainee programmes, refresher training, classification updates and specialty workshops, supporting coders from entry level through to National Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC) and beyond.
You will work within a leadership team that includes an NHS England Approved Trainer, ensuring strong professional support and a clear commitment to trainer development.
Applicants must be NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Trainers with excellent communication skills and a passion for developing others.
We would also consider applicants who have secured a place on NHS England's 2026/27 Clinical Coding Trainer Programme (CCTP) Assessment Day (June 2026).
What we offer:
Previous applicants need not apply
As Clinical Coding Trainer, you will plan, organise and deliver a comprehensive training programme for the Trust’s Clinical Coding Department, supporting staff from trainee level through to accredited coders. This will include delivering structured trainee programmes, Clinical Coding Standards Refresher courses, classification updates, specialty-based workshops and bespoke one-to-one development.
Working closely with the audit and extended leadership team, you will identify learning needs, develop targeted action plans and implement SMART recommendations to continuously improve coding quality, accuracy and consistency across all specialties.
You will provide expert advice on complex coding queries, applying national standards in ICD-10, OPCS-4 and related guidance, while supporting the implementation of new standards and updates. Acting as a key link between coders, clinicians and management, you will promote engagement, improve documentation quality and ensure coded data supports reimbursement, performance reporting and clinical governance.
The role is peripatetic across all sites within the Northern Care Alliance, requiring strong communication skills, leadership presence and the ability to influence and motivate others to achieve high-quality, standards-compliant clinical coding.
Working closely with our audit and leadership teams, you will identify learning needs, develop targeted action plans and embed national standards across all sites.
The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) provides hospital and integrated health and social care services to over one million people living across Greater Manchester. Our 20,000 colleagues care for people in hospital and in the community, working across Bury, Rochdale, Oldham and Salford, to save and improve lives.
As a large NHS trust we are committed to enhancing the health of our local population by delivering consistently high standards of care and working closely with local authorities and key partners. We believe in our power and potential to make a difference and we’re always looking for people who demonstrate our three core values - care , appreciate and inspire – to join our team.
In return, we can offer you a job role with purpose and flexibility. The size and scale of the NCA means we can provide more challenge and opportunities so your career can always be moving in the right direction. By joining us you can also access a competitive benefits package, including, a fantastic annual leave allowance, flexible working opportunities and protected hours for health and wellbeing activities, helping you to achieve more personal downtime and a better work-life balance.
