Specialist Notetaker and Academic Support Worker
Applications are now open for the 2026/27 academic year (starting September 2026)
The role will start properly in September 2026, in anticipation of receiving student timetables for the new academic year. If you would like to get registered now though and be ready for then, please feel free to get in touch.
This is a perfect role for current university students, recent graduates and an individual seeking part-time/term-time work within normal working hours in an academic environment.
Do you pride yourself in your high academic standards, have a typing speed of 50 words per minute or more, are a laptop owner, enjoy learning and the university environment and have a desire to help others succeed and achieve their full potential?
About us
Cosmic People are a family run company with over 14 years’ experience; a DSA (Disabled Students' Allowance) registered provider who pride ourselves in providing excellent NMH (Non-Medical Help) support to students with disabilities in Higher Education.
About the role
We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Specialist Notetaker and Academic Support Worker. As a current student or recent graduate, you will have a good understanding of the university environment.
As a Specialist Notetaker you will be based on an exciting and vibrant university campus attending lectures on a variety of subjects, producing accurate and detailed electronic notes for students who are visually and/or hearing impaired. The role is long term, is term time only and provides regular weekly hours.
As an Academic Support Worker, there are a variety of different ways you will help a student depending on their needs, such as:
- Practical Support
- Library Support
- Sighted Guide
- Study Assistant
- Exam Support
- Proofreading
You will be required to undertake our in-house CPD-accredited Specialist Notetaker training for this role, which will qualify you as a Specialist Notetaker.
You will also be required to undertake our in-house CPD-accredited Disability Awareness and Safeguarding training, which will assist you in your role.
Hours
We ideally require a minimum availability of two full days per week. The role requires flexibility and is not a fixed 9-5 position. The support is based on campus and the hours will be dependent on student timetables. This is a part-time, flexible role with no fixed end date and there are no guaranteed hours until we receive student timetables that match your availability.
Requirements for the role
- A current university student (ideally 2nd year) or a recent graduate
- Laptop owner
- Live near a university based on the location advertised
- Fast and accurate typist with a speed of at least 50 words per minute
- Be willing and able to provide support in both roles (Specialist Notetaker and Academic Support Worker), sometimes both for the same student
- Undertake and complete our Specialist Notetaker, Disability Awareness, and Safeguarding CPD-accredited training modules to a satisfactory standard.
- Have excellent communication, time management and organisational skills
- Fluent in English with exceptional spelling and grammar
- Be able to work flexibly to support a student's needs
- Be reliable, punctual and resilient
- Be able to recognise and capture the main points of a lecture and type simultaneously whilst listening to the speaker
- Maintain professional boundaries and respect confidentiality and data protection requirements
- Be hard-working, capable, confident, and able to work on your own initiative
- Have excellent interpersonal skills: empathy, diplomacy and sensitivity
- Have a genuine desire to make a difference and help others
- All staff to undertake 5 hours of Sighted Guide relevant CPD annually
Training and ongoing support is provided. Cosmic People are a CPD accredited company, and you will have the opportunity to achieve CPD accreditation in a variety of training areas relevant to your role, resulting in a certificate.
