Full job description

Theatre Nurse

Belfast Skin Clinic Belfast

£45,760 per annum Full-time Permanent

Belfast Skin Clinic is a leading independent dermatology and skin surgery clinic. Due to continued growth and expansion, we are looking for a skilled Theatre Nurse to deliver safe, high-quality perioperative care to patients undergoing dermatological and minor surgical procedures — including skin cancer excisions, biopsies, minor operations, and curettage and cautery.

Working closely with our consultants, surgeons and nursing team, you will undertake scrub and circulating duties, prepare and maintain the surgical environment and instrumentation, and ensure the safety, dignity and comfort of every patient before, during and after their procedure. You'll play a key role in infection prevention, surgical safety and accurate specimen handling within the skin cancer pathway.

What you'll do

● Undertake scrub and circulating duties for dermatological, vascular and plastic surgery and minor operations.

● Prepare the operating/treatment room, instruments and sterile field, and assist the surgeon throughout each procedure.

● Complete the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and maintain accurate swab, needle, sharps and instrument counts.

● Handle, label and dispatch surgical specimens accurately for histopathology — a critical step in the skin cancer pathway.

● Maintain aseptic technique, infection prevention and decontamination standards, and provide post-procedure care and aftercare advice.

What we're looking for

● Registered Nurse (Adult) with current, unrestricted NMC registration.

● Post-registration experience in a theatre, surgical, minor-ops or perioperative setting.

● Experience of scrub and/or circulating duties.

● Meticulous attention to detail, calm under pressure, compassionate and patient-centred, with excellent teamwork and communication.

Desirable

● Post-registration qualification in perioperative / theatre nursing; ILS / resuscitation training; mentorship or teaching qualification.

● Experience in dermatological or plastic surgery, specimen handling and histology tracking, and instrument decontamination/sterilisation.

Role summary

The Theatre Nurse provides safe, high-quality perioperative nursing care to patients undergoing dermatological and minor surgical procedures at Belfast Skin Clinic — including skin cancer excisions, biopsies, minor operations, curettage and cautery. The post-holder undertakes scrub and circulating duties, prepares and maintains the surgical environment and instrumentation, and ensures the safety, dignity and comfort of every patient. The role is key to infection prevention, surgical safety, accurate specimen handling and the smooth running of the clinic's operating and treatment sessions.

Key responsibilities

● Undertake scrub and circulating duties for dermatological, vascular and plastic surgery and minor operations, anticipating the needs of the operating surgeon.

● Prepare the operating/treatment room, equipment, instruments and sterile field, ensuring everything required is available and functioning.

● Provide skilled care before, during and after surgery; monitor patients and escalate any deterioration, reaction or complication.

● Deliver post-procedure care, wound dressing and aftercare advice, and support safe discharge.

● Complete the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and pre-operative checks; maintain accurate swab, needle, sharps and instrument counts.

● Handle, label and record specimens accurately and ensure correct, traceable dispatch to histopathology, reconciling histology tracking so no sample or result is lost.

● Adhere to aseptic non-touch technique and infection-prevention standards; undertake cleaning, decontamination and sterilisation of instruments.

● Check, maintain and report on theatre equipment; manage stock of consumables, sutures, instruments and sterile supplies; ensure emergency and resuscitation equipment is ready.

● Maintain current NMC registration and practise within the NMC Code; keep skills up to date through CPD and revalidation.

● Work within clinic policies, RQIA standards and clinical governance, health & safety and consent requirements; contribute to audit, incident reporting and quality improvement.

● Support and mentor healthcare assistants and less experienced colleagues.

Person specification — essential

● Registered Nurse (Adult) with current, unrestricted NMC registration.

● Post-registration nursing experience, including in a theatre, surgical, minor-ops or perioperative setting, with scrub and/or circulating duties.

● Knowledge of aseptic technique, infection prevention, surgical safety, the WHO checklist and swab/instrument counts.

● Accurate documentation and record-keeping; good organisational and prioritisation skills.

● Calm and reliable under pressure; meticulous attention to detail; compassionate, patient-centred and an effective team worker.

Person specification — desirable

● Post-registration qualification in perioperative / theatre nursing; ILS / resuscitation training; mentorship or teaching qualification.

● Experience in dermatological or plastic surgery, specimen handling and histology tracking, and instrument decontamination/sterilisation.

● Knowledge of RQIA standards for independent healthcare and decontamination standards.

Terms

● A private-clinic role, not aligned to NHS Agenda for Change terms. It reflects the current requirements of the post and may be reviewed in consultation with the post-holder.

● All appointments are subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks, including AccessNI/enhanced disclosure, NMC registration verification, occupational health clearance and references.
