Full job description

Annual salary: Salary: £25,052.03 per annum pro rata

At Saint Catherine’s, we believe that excellent care begins with a compassionate and skilled team. As we expand our services – including the launch of our new Respite Care provision – we are looking to recruit committed and caring Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) to join our team.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a values-led organisation delivering specialist palliative and end-of-life care to patients across Scarborough and the surrounding areas. Whether you're experienced or new to the care sector, if you are passionate about providing outstanding person-centred care, we would love to hear from you.

About the Role

As a Healthcare Assistant at Saint Catherine’s, you will work under the guidance of registered nurses to deliver hands-on care and support to patients and their families. You will play a crucial role in ensuring patients feel safe, comfortable, and respected at all times.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Under the supervision of the registered nurse, provide a high standard of person-centred-nursing care on the In-Patient Unit.
  • To develop experience of palliative care and symptom control.
  • To participate in integrated working across all Patient Services departments, with flexibility as needed to ensure effective service delivery in all areas.
  • To observe and report the patient’s general condition and response to prescribed treatments to senior nursing and medical staff as appropriate.
  • To undertake personal care as required.
  • Whilst you will be allocated a principal place of work on the inpatient unit, you may be required to support the community Fastrack team.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for individuals who are:

  • Kind, compassionate, and committed to delivering high-quality care

  • Excellent communicators, with strong interpersonal skills and empathy

  • Able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Reliable, flexible, and responsive to the needs of patients and their families

  • Willing to learn and committed to professional development

  • Previous experience in a healthcare, care home, or hospice setting is desirable but not essential – full training and induction will be provided for the right candidates.

We also welcome applications from those with experience in caring for individuals with frailty, long-term conditions, dementia, or complex needs.

What We Offer

Working at Saint Catherine’s is more than just a role — it’s an opportunity to be part of a team that truly makes a difference. Every member of staff plays a vital part in delivering compassionate care and support to patients and their families during some of the most important times of their lives. We’re proud to foster a collaborative and supportive working environment where your skills and dedication are truly valued.

As part of our team, you’ll benefit from:

  • Flexible working patterns (full-time, part-time, and job share options)

  • Ongoing clinical education and development opportunities

  • A supportive, inclusive, and collaborative working environment

  • The opportunity to be involved in shaping new services that directly support patients and carers

  • Access to the NHS pension scheme (subject to eligibility)

  • Employee Assistance Programme to support your wellbeing

  • Free on-site parking for convenience and ease

  • Subsidised meals at our on-site Flavours Bistro

  • Access to our on-site gym for your health and wellness

  • Staff discounts in our Saint Catherine’s charity shops

Whether you’re looking to develop your career or simply want to do meaningful work in a supportive setting, Saint Catherine’s is a place where you can grow, feel valued, and know that what you do matters.

Closing Date: Friday 6 November 2026

Saint Catherine’s Hospice is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. All staff are expected to share this commitment and work in accordance with our safeguarding policies and procedures. An enhanced DBS check will be required for this role.
