Full job description
Why this role?
Medication safety is at the heart of delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care.
This role gives you the opportunity to shape the organisation’s approach to medication safety, influence national and local decision‑making, and directly contribute to safer outcomes for patients. If you're passionate about improving systems, learning from incidents, and driving meaningful change, this is a chance to make a real impact.
What you’ll be doing
As our Medication Safety Specialist, you’ll be the organisation’s expert lead for medication and medical device safety. In this role, you will:
- Lead and improve medication incident reporting, learning, and action planning.
- Investigate medication safety incidents using tools such as SEIPS (Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety) and AAR (after-action-reviews) to translate findings into effective improvements.
- Represent the organisation at medication safety committees and drive actions that improve patient safety.
- Work closely with managers, pharmacists, and nursing colleagues to ensure key learning is embedded and shared across the organisation.
- Produce monthly and quarterly governance reports that support safe practice.
- Engage with local and national medication safety networks, including other NHS Trusts and academic partners.
- Develop safety training materials, SOPs, and contribute to wider policy development.
Who we’re looking for
You will be a confident, experienced healthcare professional with:
- Significant experience in community or hospital pharmacy.
- Strong experience in clinical governance and medication safety.
- The ability to influence key stakeholders and support change management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical capability with resilience under pressure.
- A collaborative, energetic, and proactive approach.
- Experience with Patient Safety Incident Response Framework, NRLS, Yellow Card reporting and Duty of Candour.
Qualifications:
- MPharm or equivalent undergraduate Pharmacy degree or Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent.
- GPhC registration with up to date CPD
What’s in it for you
- A strategic, high‑impact role influencing safety culture across the organisation
- Opportunity to work with national networks and external partners
- A supportive environment focused on learning, innovation, and continuous improvement
- Flexibility through a part‑time 17.5‑hour contract
- The chance to shape safer care for our patients
