Full job description

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service would like to invite applications for the role of Wellbeing Technician based at Portlethen, Inverness and Oban.

There are currently 3 full-time vacancies, working 35 hours per week, though applications from individuals seeking to work on a part time, job share or flexible working basis are welcome.

The SFRS Wellbeing Department provides Occupational Health, Fitness and Physiotherapy services to over 7,000 staff. Our workforce spans a range of staff groups — including Operational Firefighters, Control and Support staff — each with distinct health and wellbeing requirements to support them in carrying out their roles safely.

The physical and mental health of our people is a key priority for the Service. We are recruiting Wellbeing Technicians to help deliver services that support a positive health, fitness and wellbeing culture across the organisation.

We have a bold ambition to transform the SFRS and the Wellbeing team have a key role to play in this by supporting staff throughout their employee experience and helping to make the SFRS a great place to work.

The successful candidates will support the development and delivery of an effective Wellbeing Service within the SFRS, with a focus on enhancing firefighter safety. This includes carrying out health and fitness assessments, providing ongoing support to operational employees, and contributing to projects that promote employee health, fitness and wider organisational transformation.

Each post holder will report to a Wellbeing Practitioner and work closely with colleagues across the Wellbeing Team to deliver departmental and directorate objectives.

The role requires extensive travel across Scotland, including evening working and regular overnight stays away from home, to ensure effective service delivery.

Candidates should hold either an HNC in Sport or Exercise Science (or equivalent qualification at SCQF Level 7) that includes units covering exercise testing and health screening, or an SVQ in Health and Social Care (or equivalent experience in a health and wellbeing / occupational health environment). A willingness to undertake further training within the role across these areas is also required.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate proven experience in conducting valid and reliable health or fitness assessments and in supporting individuals to implement lifestyle changes that improve health, wellbeing or performance.

A full UK driving licence is essential, along with the ability to travel and work across the SFRS footprint. The role requires extensive travel across Scotland to deliver Wellbeing services at SFRS fire stations, including evening working and regular overnight stays away from home to support service delivery needs.

Full details of the role and our recruitment process can be found in the recruitment information pack.

Salary on appointment will normally be at the lower salary point, with progression subject to regular review – in line with the SFRS performance appraisal arrangements. A higher salary placing will be considered in exceptional circumstances subject to experience demonstrated.

This post is subject to the provision of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exclusions and Exemptions) Scotland Order 2013. The successful candidate will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme and will be required to carry out regulated work with adults.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is an Equal Opportunities employer and encourage applications from all sectors of the community. In addition, we are committed to being a “Disability Confident Employer” and will ensure that all applicants who meet the essential criteria for the role are invited for interview.

Applications are to be submitted via myjobscotland using the link provided.

If you would like to apply in a different format, please email People Services at SFRS.PODVacancies@firescotland.gov.uk.
