Full job description

We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and organized Health Care Assistant (HCA) to join our multi-disciplinary general practice team. The successful candidate will play a vital role in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care within the surgery. This position offers an excellent opportunity to support our patients' health and wellbeing through clinical tasks, health promotion, and administrative efficiency. The role requires excellent communication skills, strong attention to detail, and a caring, professional attitude to ensure our diverse patient population receives respectful and efficient care.

Duties

Clinical Measurements: Undertake routine clinical tasks such as taking blood pressure, measuring BMI (height and weight), recording ECGs, and urinalysis.

Phlebotomy:Perform venepuncture (blood draws) as requested by GPs and nursing staff.

Chronic Disease Support:Assist practice nurses with routine clinics (e.g., NHS Health Checks, diabetic foot checks, and smoking cessation advice).

Specimen Management: Process and prepare laboratory specimens, ensuring accurate labeling and documentation.

Infection Control & Stock:Maintain clean, well-stocked clinical rooms, ensuring proper disposal of clinical waste and management of medical supplies.

Documentation:Maintain accurate, real-time electronic patient records using the surgery’s IT systems (e.g., EMIS Web or SystmOne) in line with confidentiality and GDPR guidelines.

Chaperoning: Act as a chaperone for clinicians during patient examinations when required.

Patient Communication: Foster a welcoming environment, addressing patient queries with empathy, clarity, and professionalism.

Requirements

Experience: Previous experience as an HCA within a GP surgery or primary care setting is highly desirable (Care Certificate or equivalent NVQ Level 2/3 in Health and Social Care is a plus).

Skills: Proficiency in phlebotomy and basic clinical observations is preferred, though training can be provided for the right candidate.

IT Literacy Good IT skills are essential for navigating electronic medical records and practice software.

Communication:Strong verbal and written communication skills in English to interact effectively with patients, carers, and the wider clinical team.

Professionalism: A compassionate nature with a strict adherence to patient confidentiality and safeguarding protocols.

Teamwork:Ability to work collaboratively within a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary medical team.
