Are you looking for a rewarding part-time cooking role where you can prepare traditional, home-cooked meals in a warm and welcoming setting?

St Joseph's Convent in Whitby is looking for a caring, reliable and experienced Assistant Cook to join our friendly Religious Community. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who enjoys preparing wholesome, home-style food and takes pride in creating nourishing meals in a role where their work is genuinely valued.

You'll prepare traditional, home-cooked meals using fresh, seasonal ingredients for a small community, with occasional catering for birthdays, Feast Days, visitors and other special gatherings. If you enjoy baking, creating comforting favourites, planning balanced menus and preparing food that feels personal and homely, this could be the perfect role for you.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Work closely with the Cook, Household Administrator and Community Leader to plan balanced, varied menus.
  • Prepare and cook nutritious, traditional home-style meals using fresh, seasonal ingredients.
  • Prepare everyday meals as well as food for special occasions, celebrations and community events.
  • Adapt meals to meet individual dietary requirements and preferences.
  • Maintain high standards of food hygiene, cleanliness and kitchen safety.
  • Monitor stock levels, receive deliveries and help minimise food waste.
  • Keep accurate kitchen records, including temperature checks, cleaning schedules and food safety documentation.

About You

  • You'll be someone who genuinely enjoys cooking for others and takes pride in serving good, honest food.
  • Experience as a Cook or Assistant Cook, preferably within a care, community, hospitality or similar environment.
  • Confidence preparing traditional home-cooked meals, baking and homemade desserts.
  • The ability to adapt menus to suit dietary needs and individual preferences.
  • A good understanding of food hygiene and food safety regulations.
  • The ability to work calmly, independently and efficiently in a homely kitchen environment.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • A warm, respectful approach and the ability to work within a Religious Community.
  • Flexibility to support occasional community events and celebrations.
  • A genuine passion for preparing nutritious, comforting meals that people look forward to.

Why Join Us?

You'll become part of a friendly and supportive community where your cooking helps create comfort, routine and a true sense of home. This role offers sociable part-time hours, meaningful work and the opportunity to be part of a values-led, non-profit organisation.

We Offer

  • 30 days' annual leave (pro rata), increasing to 35 days with service milestones
  • Paid breaks
  • Uniform provided
  • Subsidised meals during shifts
  • Free on-site parking
  • Stunning sea views and a welcoming, homely working environment
  • Employee Assistance Programme with 24/7 confidential support and counselling
  • Access to over 6,000 discounts on shopping, travel, leisure and more
  • Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Ongoing training and development opportunities
  • The opportunity to work for a values-led, non-profit organisation where people always come first

We warmly welcome applications from people of all faiths, backgrounds and beliefs who support the values and mission of the Institute of Our Lady of Mercy.

If you're looking for a fulfilling part-time role where traditional cooking, genuine hospitality and making a difference go hand in hand, we'd love to hear from you.
