PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Be a trusted voice at the heart of Cornwall. As a part-time journalist with Radio Cornwall, you’ll prepare and present our weekend news, creating sharp, accurate bulletins that keep audiences informed every Saturday and Sunday. Your additional weekday shift will give you opportunities beyond newsreading, from reporting and interviewing for BBC South West to producing radio, focusing on telling the stories that matter and ensuring Cornwall’s communities are heard.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
You’ll be part of a supportive South West News team dedicated to delivering brilliant weekend output, with real responsibility for keeping Cornwall informed. Alongside this key role, your weekday shift offers opportunities to develop and maintain your skills in production and reporting across radio, online and TV. It’s a role combining ownership, variety and the chance to keep growing as a journalist.
- Be a trusted voice, delivering accurate, authoritative live news bulletins.
- Create pacy, engaging content that connects with Cornwall’s communities.
- Exercise sound editorial judgement, delivering accurate and responsible journalism.
- Find original stories and new voices, reflecting the breadth of Cornwall’s communities.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- Professional newsreading experience, with the confidence to deliver live, timed bulletins.
- Strong research and writing skills, with a flair for tight, engaging broadcast copy.
- Excellent attention to detail, with a strong focus on accuracy and the ability to interpret data.
- Journalism qualification or equivalent experience, including significant and demonstrable relevant industry experience.
- Ability to work calmly and accurately under pressure in a fast-paced, live news environment.
DESIRABLE, BUT NOT REQUIRED
- Live studio production experience in a professional broadcast environment.
- Strong knowledge of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, and an understanding of the stories and issues that matter to local audiences.
If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
