JOB TITLE – HORTICULTURAL OPERATIVE

Eden Horticultural Ltd is a small but fast-growing garden design and build company working throughout Essex, based in Chelmsford, we operate in the surrounding areas providing landscaping and garden maintenance services, to mainly the domestic sector. We design and build gardens that are uniquely tailored to each of our client’s specific needs, tastes and lifestyles. These gardens are built with the highest quality workmanship and finished to the best possible standard with the objective of providing our clients many years of enjoyment. Great customer service and communication are at the heart of everything we do and are key to delivering our clients with a first-class landscaping experience, from initial enquiry through to delivery of the finished garden and beyond. We strive to provide excellence in whatever we do, be it offering advice on the phone, to leaving clients with their dream gardens.

Job Purpose:

Working under the direction of the Senior Horticultural Assistant/Foreman, the Horticultural Assistant will provide assistance and carry out general tasks to ensure that projects are delivered safely and to a high standard, whilst exceeding our client’s expectations. This role will be responsible for ensuring the upkeep and aesthetics of our clients' gardens, and outdoor spaces as well as creating and improving new garden planting and soft landscaping tasks. This role involves a variety of tasks, such as, planting, pruning, mowing, weeding, turfing, tree planting, installing soft landscape features and a host of other specialised horticultural tasks.

Key Knowledge:

  • Proven experience in basic principles of horticulture
  • Basic knowledge of H&S requirements
  • Knowledge of plants, horticulture practices, and landscaping techniques would be helpful
  • Horticultural qualifications would be helpful, but not essential.
  • Safe use of horticultural machinery

Key Skills & Responsibilities:

  • Hands on involvement in lawn maintenance, general gardening, planting, water feature maintenance, tree and hedge pruning and all other aspects of general garden maintenance including weed control and removal to maintain a neat and tidy appearance
  • Monitor and maintain irrigation systems to ensure proper hydration of plants
  • Plant and transplant flowers, shrubs, and trees according to landscaping plans. Ensure proper soil preparation and apply fertilizers as needed. Monitor plant health and address issues such as pests and diseases
  • Assist with new lawn installations
  • Proficient in the use of gardening tools and equipment
  • Adhere to H&S guidelines and risk assessments are adhered to and wear correct PPE
  • Ensuring COSHH risk assessments are adhered to for herbicides and chemicals used
  • Great team and customer communication skills
  • Able to work to a good standard under own motivation and self checking.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of the tools and equipment required for this job role, such as mowers, strimmers, hedgecutters etc.
  • Specialist pruning skills on roses, wisteria etc
  • Skills in plant and weed identification
  • Some pest and disease identification skills
  • Key tasks such as turfing, tree planting, shrub planting, maintaining wildflower meadows and plantings, as well as ponds and water features estate management and various other soft landscaping tasks, we run a very varied list of works

Salary: £28,000 - £32,000 dependant on experience.

Hours of work: Monday to Friday 7am-4.30pm

Possibility of some weekend working
