Location

Arundel Castle is a restored medieval castle located in Arundel, West Sussex, England. It was established during the reign of Edward the Confessor and completed by Roger de Montgomery, who was a cousin of William the Conqueror. The castle has been the seat of the Earls of Arundel and the Dukes of Norfolk since the 11th century and is a Grade I-listed building. It was damaged during the English Civil War and then restored in the 18th and 19th centuries. The castle has been visited by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and has undergone several restorative works over the centuries. Now the seat of the 18th Duke of Norfolk/Earl Marshall of England, Edward Fitzalan-Howard, today the castle also features extensive gardens and is open to visitors between April and October.

Role Summary

A ‘hands on’ role leading the maintenance, conservation and cleaning of the Castle. A rewarding role combining day to day operational responsibilities together with planning, undertaking and supervising works to preserve and enhance the Castle. The emphasis of the role changes between the open season (April to October) and the closed season (November to March) as detailed below. The role requires flexibility combining regular duties with operational and staff matters as they arise together with weekend, bank holiday and event working.

The role reports to the Castle Manager but given the diverse range of the role many aspects will on a day to day basis require liaison with other Heads of Departments. There will also be some direct contact with the Castle Trustees including reports to and attendance at meetings. The Maintenance Budget is managed in liaison with the Finance Manager.

Applications are welcomed from those from a wide range of trade skills and whilst experience of working on heritage buildings may be beneficial more important is a desire to learn and lead by example adopting a ‘hands on approach’ at all times. The role is open to applicants both with experience of managing teams and those looking to take their first leadership step.
