Estate Worker Part Time - 24 per week

Overview

Bader College, located at historic Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex, is the overseas campus of Queen’s University, Canada. The campus occupies a 600-acre estate, including a range of academic, residential, and recreational facilities. Our wholly owned trading subsidiary, Herstmonceux Castle Estates Limited (HCE), is responsible for running the gardens and grounds, corporate events, and other functions.

The Gardens and Grounds team are responsible for the maintenance of our Grade 2* listed Parks and Gardens, Ancient woodland, wildflower meadows and ponds which incorporate Bader College campus and Herstmonceux Castle Estate Visitor Attraction, you will enhance, maintain and protect these environments whilst ensuring the health and safety of our students, visitors, and guests. The team is central to ensuring that the Gardens and Grounds are maintained to a high standard and meet business needs.

Each member of the team is required to demonstrate high levels of flexibility and co-operative working to ensure that seasonal and reactive tasks are undertaken according to direction and immediate need. Student, staff and visitor safety is paramount at all times. They should have an interest in sustainable and environmental principles and look to encourage these in all aspects of their work.

The post holder will require good landscape and conservation knowledge and practical expertise delivered through a professional and well-motivated approach and experience of working within all relevant areas.

The Gardens and Grounds department consists of 7 members of staff (6.2 FTE) and :

  • Estate and Gardens supervisor (1.0 FTE)
  • Garden Team Leader (0.8 FTE)
  • 3 x Gardeners (2.6 FTE)
  • 2 x Estate worker (1.06 FTE)

Working hours: Part time, normal working hours will be 24 hours per week over 5 days.

Salary: £14,839 plus benefits.

Job Description

Main purposes of job

Working collaboratively as part of a team, to provide an exceptional level of service to Bader College and Herstmonceux Castle Estate Limited (HCE). Dealing with seasonal maintenance tasks as part of the Gardens and Grounds Team. Providing Bader College and HCE with Estate maintenance support and enabling the delivery of an outstanding educational, working, and events environment.

To maintain the estate grounds to a high standard, whilst adhering to all health and safety regulations

Main duties

  • To Carry out seasonal tasks in the Estate.
  • Maintenance of the grounds to a high environmental and presentable standard.
  • Woodland management, including tree felling and arboriculture.
  • Management of amenity grassland.
  • Carrying out conservation and ecological improvements.
  • Maintenance and repair of all machinery and attachments.
  • Landscaping and basic horticultural activities.
  • Operating tractors, trailer loads and attachments.
  • Strimming, mowing and hedge cutting.
  • Fencing.
  • Maintenance of the estate ponds.
  • Carrying out pest control.
  • Following risk assessments and using appropriate PPE.
  • Collection of materials, parts, and consumables.
  • To comply with current Health & Safety at Work regulations.

Other duties

There may be times during a busy period an event or an emergency when you could be asked to work during the weekend

Key results/measures

  • The Grounds are well-maintained, being safe for visitors and staff to enjoy.
  • The working area is maintained in a safe workman-like manner.
  • Seasonal tasks are delivered in an efficient tidy and timely manner.
  • Vehicle machinery and equipment checks are kept up-to-date

Person Specification

Qualifications and Relevant role-related training.

A recognised City & Guilds or NVQ 2 qualification in a horticulture/ conservation/ landscape/ forestry, or a related subject.

Skills/ competencies

  • Clean driving licence.
  • CS31 and CS30 certificates in chain saw maintenance and tree felling.
  • GCSE passes in English and Maths.
  • Recognised national diploma in relevant subject or vocational experience.
  • PA1 and PA6 certificates in spraying
  • CS38 and CS39 certificates in aerial rescue and tree climbing.

CS32 certificate in felling of large trees.

Knowledge and experience

  • Problem solving.
  • Ability to work competently alone.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • A good mechanical understanding.

Special attributes

  • Practical experience of various rural skills.
  • Experience with tractors and attachments.
  • Good understanding of conservation and the Countryside and Wildlife Act.
  • Basic understanding of tree and woodland management.
