Responsible to Director

Job summary

Responsible for the general maintenance and development of a private garden space for food growing, mainly in the East Grinstead area and could include some surrounding areas, creating a garden environment that is enjoyable, safe, and secure for both its garden owners and its visitors.

Main duties

Tasks will vary on a daily basis and from garden to garden as determined by the Managing

Director and/or the client and may include:

● Carrying out a varied range of gardening duties, requiring a minimum amount of supervision and use of own initiative

● Soil cultivation, digging, forking, mulching, watering, raking, weeding, litter and debris

clearing, edging, pruning, seed sowing, bed preparation and planting

● The use of a wide range of hand tools, horticultural machinery and powered hand tools,

such as lawn mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters etc

● Ensuring that all tools, garden equipment and machinery are correctly maintained and

serviced and that they are kept in good and safe working order

● Assisting with the construction of raised beds

● Awareness and practising of Health and Safety legislations, ensuring a safe working

environment for everyone working or using in the garden

● Keeping the van and tool storage clean and tidy and tools stored securely at all times

● Use of natural methods for plant protection and pest control, avoiding application of

chemicals and pesticides

● Undergo training as required

● Assisting in marketing tasks, such as handing out flyers and promoting the business to

prospective new clients

Essential skills, interests and qualities

● Most importantly, you’ll share our values

● Competent, physically fit and able to do hard manual labour

● Have a track record of creating and maintaining gardens

● Ability to use a wide range of horticultural machinery and powered hand tools

● Possessing a good knowledge or interest in botany and horticulture

● Comfortable with working in all weathers and seasons

● Ability to work well as part of a team or individually

● Knowledge and experience of implementing health and safety rules and legislations

● Current and clean driving licence and confidence of driving a van.

● Good communication skills and a courteous personal manner to clients and staff

Desirable

● Knowledge and/or interest in the Permaculture Design approach

● Horticultural qualification

● First Aid qualification

● Knowledge of organic gardening methods and techniques

● Creativity and an eye for detail

● Experience of identifying pests and diseases

● Eagerness to learn and improve

● Ability to pass on knowledge and educate teams

Job Types: Part-time, Permanent, Temp to perm
Contract length: 12 months

Pay: £12.00 per hour

Expected hours: 20 per week

Experience:

  • Gardening: 1 year (preferred)

Licence/Certification:

  • Driving Licence (preferred)
