Job description
About us
At Wiltshire Police, we are dedicated to making our community a safer place for everyone. Our team is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and service. We believe in creating a supportive and inclusive environment where every member can thrive and make a meaningful impact. Whether you’re just starting your career or looking to advance, Wiltshire Police offers a range of opportunities to grow and develop. Join us, and be part of a team that values courage, compassion, and dedication to public service. Help us to keep Wiltshire safe.
Wiltshire has lots of layers - prehistoric stones, wartime bunkers, secret trails and hidden churches. But behind all of that, keeping our community safe across the years are generations of quiet police work. Some of it heroic, some of it worrying, but all of it real.
We’re proud to be an Equal Opportunity employer, and we’re committed to building an inclusive, diverse community that celebrates and welcomes everyone.
If there are any adjustments we could make to the recruitment and selection process to support you, please let us know
About the role
We are seeking a Coroner’s Officer to join our team in Salisbury on Endless Street. In this role, you will conduct inquiries into deaths that are sudden, of unknown cause, unnatural, or occur in custody. Serving as the primary contact for the Coroner's Office, you will interact closely with bereaved families, health professionals, police, emergency services, and other relevant parties to ensure thorough investigations and compassionate support for all stakeholders involved.
This role offers a unique and meaningful opportunity to support families during difficult times while ensuring that legal and procedural standards are met. If you are dedicated, empathetic, and possess a meticulous approach to your work, we encourage you to apply.
What you will be doing
Collaborate with the Coroner, other Coroners Officers, police, medical professionals, and registrars to investigate sudden deaths across Wiltshire.
Serve as the officer in the case, collecting evidence on identity, social, and medical history, taking statements, and preparing comprehensive reports for Coroner’s review.
Develop and maintain accurate death reports, capturing essential information and evidence to support the Coroner in making judicial decisions, including whether to proceed to an Inquest.
Build effective working relationships with all professional partners, ensuring understanding of Coroner’s Investigation processes and compliance with procedural requirements.
Act as a compassionate point of contact for bereaved families, providing timely advice, guidance, and support, keeping all interested parties informed at each stage of the investigation per statutory requirements.
Ensure accurate information is available for Pathologists performing post-mortems at the Coroner’s request, attend post-mortems as needed, and coordinate the timely release of bodies to families in collaboration with funeral directors.
Compile and organise case files for Inquests, liaising with witnesses and interested parties on availability and providing necessary disclosures in line with legal requirements.
Act as a court/jury officer during Inquest hearings, offering support and guidance to families and other attendees as needed.
About you and your experience
An investigative mindset—curious, analytical and methodical, with experience in identifying, pursuing and connecting lines of enquiry to establish clear, evidence-based conclusions.
Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly for communicating with bereaved families and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
Strong organisational abilities for maintaining accurate records and managing case files.
High attention to detail and capacity to handle sensitive information with integrity.
Knowledge or willingness to learn relevant legislation and procedural guidelines related to Coroner’s work.
Ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure, particularly in cases of major incidents or large-scale investigations.
PIP1 would be preferred
